Singing and Solfege

Solfege (do-re-mi) is like the alphabet for reading and is one way to teach pitch recognition. Each note on the musical scale is given a different syllable – Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La and Ti.

I begin using solfege in prep classes, I find it helps students identify when the pitch changes and they begin recognising how the notes relate to each other on the scale. Using solfege also gets us moving and it’s fun!

Grade 1/2 students used solfege this term to create their own short melodies. Check out their work below and perhaps ask your child to sing and sign their own melody to you - it’s trickier than it looks!

One of the songs we enjoy singing to practise the Curwen hand signs and sing solfege is 'Salami' – So La Mi. I’d love if you try it along with your P-2 child and let me know how you go 😊.                           Bridget.Finch@education.vic.gov.au
