Chorals

A JOURNALISTIC ENTRY ON THIS YEAR’S CHORALS:

Cottrell (≧∇≦)ノ

*phone rings* Hello? The 2000s just called and they want to commend the house of the phoenix for keeping punk rock alive and kicking. Time to kick off this year’s bedazzled Chorals with another amazing performance.

Cottrell began with their small choir and a stunning rendition of Something Just Like This by The Chainsmokers and Coldplay, and then went on to show off their talented percussionists in an impressive drumline marching sequence. The house of the phoenix kept the soul of punk rock well and alive with an awesome performance of Crybaby by Destroy Boys! Finally, they ended with an absolute classic and boyband staple: What Makes You Beautiful by One Direction.

Rothwell ( •̀ ω •́ )✧

At the yellow house, they distinguished themselves with a set list of 70’s funk for their Rock Band, Ghibli for their small choir and instrumental ensemble, and Bruno Mars for their chosen mass singing (as they are lovingly renowned for).

The vibe of their set list started out ethereal and magical with a lovely choir rendition of Carrying You from Ghibli composer, Joe Hisaishi, followed by Two of Us with their instrumental band. Then, to rock it out and funk the energy up, Rothwell flaunted a charming, playful, and bubbly rendition of Jackson Five’s I Want You Back-- straight from the 70’s, and right into the 21st Century for all to enjoy. And as the house carried it home, they finished it off with Bruno Mars’ romantic Just The Way You Are-- putting a smile on all our faces.

Blackwood (❁´◡`❁)

Back with blue, they wowed us with a diverse and exciting setlist ranging from movie soundtrack scores, something hauntingly beautiful, something to get you dancing, and some good old, enchanting, James Bond-like musicAll done in pretty tiaras, because what type of musicians would we be if not musicians in style?

Don’t let the crowns fool you-- starting off with Adele’s alluringly mysterious Skyfall for their small choir piece, they upped the competition with their instrumental ensemble’s fanciful Sleeping Beauty medley that put their mini-orchestra into full gear. Their rock band then took Michael Bublé’s Feeling Good and sent us all to space with heart-throbbing vocals and playing, right before getting us up and out of our seats with WALK THE MOON’s Shut Up and Dance!

Kororoit ♪(´▽`)

The Kororoit setlist was nothing short of what you would expect from the winning house. After their choir absolutely devoured If You Ever Forget That You Love Me by Isak Danielson, the instrumental band performed a magical arrangement of an Aladdin medley. But perhaps one of the most memorable moments was the stage presence and artistic ability of the Kororoit rock band, as they gifted us a version of This Is Why that can only be compared to the Grammy-winning original by Paramore. The red house had us bopping along to Steal My Girl by One Direction as their chosen mass song, leaving no doubt as to why they were deserving winners.

… That’s all from us Music Captains today, Suzanne Cory! We just wanted to conclude this entry with a MASSIVE round of applause for all the astounding student musicians who poured their heart and soul (and many lunchtimes) into what was, essentially, a whole concert. Ginormous thanks to the music staff, teachers, and instrumentalist teachers who made this possible, too. And how could we ever forget the Chorals Captains themselves who led their houses to glory? Wonderful work from you all.

Genuinely? Us Music Captains couldn’t be prouder of our hardworking community who tirelessly strive to bring joy and excitement to all with the power of song and togetherness. This is to a successful 2024 Chorals, and a hopeful cheer to next year.

All the love from your Whole School Music Captains,

Keerthana Karthik (C5) & Zaeena Dimog (R7)
