Classroom Learning

We’re Loving our Learning in Year 5/6!

Literacy

We had been exploring "The Wild Robot" by Peter Brown, focusing on the author's craft to improve our writing skills. We questioned the author's choice of words and sentence structures to understand the story's purpose and intended audience.

Additionally, we investigated sentence transformation, patterning and specific vocabulary to see how precise language enhances the narrative. We engaged in discussions about the book's themes and messages, reflecting on its connection to our experiences and the broader world.

We also examined character development, learning how Peter Brown portrayed the robot protagonist's journey and growth. This helped us enjoy the story while developing our analytical and creative writing skills.

Mathematics

Year 5/6 students have been exploring Statistics and Probability by investigating ideas and questions about specific topics through data collection and analysis. They have learned that data can vary in different ways and be organised by various characteristics. Students have practised collecting, sorting and counting data. They have developed skills in analysing and displaying appropriate data using different representations and visualisations, such as Dot-Plots, Bar Graphs and Tally Charts. Students have focused on finding the total of sets by grouping to add and on and communicating results through data displays, with an emphasis on similarities and differences. Additionally, students have learned to notice, describe and analyse patterns in data sets and through data visualisations, enhancing their ability to draw meaningful conclusions from their investigations.

In addition to their work in Statistics and Probability, students have continued to practise their number facts, with a focus on multiplication and division.

Religion

We read the Creation story and compared it to other religious stories and beliefs. This included the Indigenous and Buddhist religion and culture. We recognised the similarities and differences between the stories and how religions value looking after our world. National Families Week was on the 13th May- 19th May 2024, this provided us with the opportunity to value the importance of family. We read scripture depicting the benefits of family and how we need to support, love and forgive our family members. We focused on Pope Francis’ beliefs on family and the importance of family bonds. Pope Francis explains that the love we receive from our family helps us to grow in different ways. On Sunday 19th May, it was Pentecost Sunday. This day commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus. Students discussed the story and how the Holy Spirit helps us in today’s world. We are currently studying the significance of the sacraments, as we support the Year 4 students in their celebration of the Sacrament of Eucharist. We are preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation to be held in August through linking the sacraments and highlighting what it means to be a disciple of Jesus.

Inquiry

Our investigation into bees this term has been a fascinating journey into the intricate world of these vital pollinators!

To gather information we invited a local guest speaker and visited both the Melbourne Museum and the Melbourne Zoo. We explored various exhibits related to bees to discover information on their anatomy, behaviour and ecological significance.

Yellow and black dominated our National Bee Day. We spent the entire day celebrating bees, including discoveries about Bee Hotels, dioramas to present information and stop-motion animation. We also created Bee artwork to use as a display for our upcoming exhibition. The day concluded with a Bee Parade, presenting our costumes to the entire school. A wonderful celebration of learning! This learning will continue on Monday 24th June where the whole school is invited to our BEE EXHIBITION in our Mercy Hall from 3:15 pm until 4:00pm.  We hope to see you there so you too can discover the fascinating world of Bees!
