Senior School News

Exciting Times at Sacred Heart!

As we progress through our term, the senior school continues to thrive with a variety of engaging activities and learning experiences. Here's a snapshot of what our Grade 5 and Grade 6 students have been up to in the past two weeks.

Engaging English

Grade 6:

Reading: Our Grade 6s have been immersed in the novel Rivet Boy, expanding their vocabulary with words like "inexplicably," "obscured," "intimidate," "linger," "relinquish," and "sullen." They have also been working on sentence expansion using who, when, where, why, and how, and exploring the concept of juxtaposition.

Writing: They are currently putting together persuasive pieces on the topic of child labour, sharpening their argumentative writing skills.

Grade 5:

Reading: The Grade 5s have been captivated by War Horse, focusing on subordinating conjunctions and specific vocabulary such as "eerie," "hideous," and "deliberately."

Writing: Their writing focus has been on narrative creation, allowing their creativity to flourish.

Mathematics Adventures

Grade 6:

Angles: Our Grade 6 students have been exploring the fascinating world of angles. They've been classifying, measuring, and creating angles, along with learning about supplementary and complementary angles. Additionally, they've investigated the angles within triangles and quadrilaterals, gaining a comprehensive understanding of geometric concepts.

Grade 5:

Multiplication and Division: The Grade 5s have focused on finding unknowns in multiplication and division problems. They have also delved into the study of 3D objects, enhancing their spatial awareness and problem-solving skills.

Topic: Students are finishing up their unit on light, having explored various light phenomena. Next week, they will begin a new unit on electricity. This unit will have a dual focus: understanding the different forms of energy and how they can be transferred and transformed, as well as the generation, transfer, and use of electricity in our daily lives. Exciting experiments and hands-on activities await!

Religious Education

Grade 6:

Sacrament of Confirmation: Congratulations to our Grade 6 students for completing the Sacrament of Confirmation. They have now shifted their focus to studying the parable of the poor widow, delving deeper into its meaning and significance.

Grade 5:

Supporting Confirmation: During the Grade 6s' Confirmation preparation, the Grade 5s supported them by exploring the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit, enriching their understanding of these important concepts.

Extracurricular Activities:

Well done to our group of grade 6 students who have taken it upon themselves to lead our new 'quiet club'. They are doing an excellent job facilitating the activities during lunch time. A reminder, the time has shifted from the 2nd half of lunch to the 1st half of lunch. Hope to see you there!
