Grandparents’ and Special Friends' Day

On Friday 24 May, our Junior School was filled with excitement as we celebrated Grandparents’ and Special Friends' Day, welcoming over 450 guests. The event began with a Liturgy, followed by a delightful singing performance by all the girls from Reception to Year 6. This showcased some of their favourite musical songs that they sing in class, which complement their learning. Our guests also had the opportunity to visit the classrooms and enjoy a morning tea. This special occasion is certainly an important tradition that helps strengthen our Loreto community.

Burn Bright Program

Last week, our Year 5 and 6 girls participated in the Burn Bright Program, designed to empower students to become active community leaders. Through this initiative, they developed self-belief, confidence, and a positive vision for the future during an engaging, interactive workshop. The Year 5 students focused on the Global Citizens module, which provided a unique opportunity to broaden their perspectives and adopt a global outlook. By understanding the far-reaching impacts of their choices, the girls were inspired to take positive steps toward becoming responsible global and digital citizens. Meanwhile, the Year 6 program aimed to nurture strong, resilient leaders dedicated to making a difference. Recognising their roles as school leaders and role models, the girls engaged with key leadership principles through interactive activities. This hands-on approach empowered them to transform ideas into action, fostering the next generation of impactful leaders.

Year 3 camp

In Week 3, our Year 3 students embarked on their first school camp, setting off with packed bags and lots of smiles. Their adventure began with a day at Monarto Zoo, the largest safari experience outside of Africa. They then spent the night in the Adelaide Hills at Woodhouse Adventure Park, where they enjoyed a bush walk, tackled Challenge Hill, and participated in a nature bingo and exploration activity focused on the principles of "leave no trace." A big thank you must go to the dedicated staff who made this camp possible: Hattie Ziesing, Haylee Porter, and Magdalene Kho.

Chinese

We are excited to share with you the highlights and activities planned for this term in our Chinese lessons. Our goal is to immerse students in China's language and culture through engaging and interactive lessons. Here's a glimpse of what we have in store:

Reception - Family

Our Reception students are being introduced to basic family member vocabulary.  They are learning the names of family members and how to identify them in characters.

Activities include a family show-and-tell. Students will bring pictures of their family members to class and introduce them in Chinese.

Technological Activities: We will use apps to reinforce interactive language exercises and games and make learning fun and engaging.

Interactive games: We will play games like memory matching or "Who is missing?" where children identify which family member is missing from a group of pictures.

Year 1 and 2 - Exploring Transports in Chinese

Our Year 1 and 2 students are diving into the fascinating world of transport. They are learning the names of common transports, how to identify them, and how to express their likes and dislikes. We have planned fun activities such as Transport Show and Tell: Students will bring pictures or small toys of their transport to class and introduce them in Chinese.

Creative Arts and Crafts: Students will create pictures of transports while practicing the vocabulary they've learned.

Interactive Games: We will play games that reinforce transport-related vocabulary and phrases.

Year 3 and 4 - Season and Weather

For Years 3 and 4, we are focusing on seasons and weather-related vocabulary. Students will learn to talk about the weather.  Activities include:

Role-Playing: Students will practice their speaking skills by acting out as a news reporter in pairs or small groups to forecast the weather for the week.

Weather Creation: Each student will create a weather wheel, labelling them in Chinese.

Year 5 -Countries and Languages

For Year 5 students, we are focusing on different Chinese-speaking countries (China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia).

International Expo: Each student will create booths representing one Chinese-speaking country. Each booth will include posters, artifacts, and digital presentations about the country's geography, landmarks, culture, and customs.

Year 4's Exciting 3D Cookie Cutter Project

Our Year 4 class is up to something special this term! They’re combining tech, design, and a bit of baking magic to create their own 3D-printed cookie cutters. And the best part? These delightful shortbread cookies they make will be shared with our local parish community.

The students have been learning about 3D design software to dream up their unique cookie cutter shapes. We’re talking stars, animals, and some pretty unique patterns. Once their designs were ready, we fired up our school’s 3D printers and watch their ideas come to life in plastic form.

Next stop will be the kitchen. In their food tech class, the students will use their custom cutters to whip up some delicious shortbread cookies. It’s hands-on, messy, and loads of fun. Plus, they get to see how their digital designs work in the real world.

But here’s the sweetest part: all those yummy shortbread cookies will be donated to our local parish. It’s a fantastic way for the kids to give back and share their hard work with the community.

This project is teaching our Year 4s some great skills in design and technology, and it’s also a wonderful lesson in kindness and community spirit. We’re super proud of what they’ve done so far and can’t wait to see (and taste!) their final creations.
