Debating

Debating Update
It's been a big few weeks for the debating program.
On August 20th, our A-Grade team of Alex Lang Wright, Sam Roberts and Hamish Emmett competed in the first playoff in the DAV finals series against Loyola College at Lowther Anglican College in Essendon. Debating the negative on the topic "That Australia should have a maximum household wealth limit," the team narrowly lost by two points. Reaching the finals after the regular interschool season is a strong result in itself and we are all very proud of their efforts!
On Wednesday 2nd September, NHS hosted the second DAV playoff round, welcoming 62 debating teams from Years 8 to 12. Running an event of this size took considerable organisation, and thanks go to our debating volunteers: Alister Nunn, Erica Cheong-Holdaway, Luca Marcoux-McCaffrey, Lulu Martyn, Indigo O'Brien, Uma Nallaratnam and Kester Jones who were instrumental in setting up the spaces and guiding guests to the right areas – we could not have done it without you!
Looking ahead to Term 4, our Year 7 and 8 students will take part in their first interschool debates as part of the JSP program after their training session the other week, and NHS will host the annual Grade 6 public speaking competition in mid Term 4.
Looking further ahead, there will be more opportunites to participate in debating and public speaking competitions in 2027 – so keep your eyes peeled for announcements! All welcome.
