DRAMA EXCURSIONS TO ACMI AND THE ARTS CENTRE 

Lights, Camera, Action: On Monday 31st August, the Middle School Lights Camera Action class went to ACMI in Federation Square for an all-day workshop called ‘Film It’. They learnt about the production process and the steps in each stage and then spent the rest of the day filming and editing. 

Here’s what they had to say about the day:

“The whole experience was really fun and being able to create a film by ourselves.” 

 “It was cool to not only be able to do some acting but also what happens behind the camera and editing.” 

 “I liked making a movie.” 

 “I liked using our imaginations and every group's film was different even though we used the same script.” 

 “I liked how it was so interactive and hands on.” 

 “The people that ran the workshop were really nice and helpful.” 

 “I liked using the professional camera.” 

 “I liked the editing process and learning about how to do this.” 

Recently, the VCE Drama students in Year 11 and Year 12 went to the Arts Centre to view the play ‘Animal Farm’. This version of Animal Farm was an adaptation of the novel but was developed further by the production company, Bloomshed, and included a vision of what might have happened after the end of the novel. 

The company devised some excellent and high energy scenes that also reflected contemporary politics. With references to Scott Morrison and Julia Gillard, the humour was relevant and easy to understand. 

There was lots of audience interaction and even some confetti canons. The company’s adaptation demonstrated how theatre remains entertaining as well as being sharp satirical social commentary and gave the students lots of ideas of how to use different stage conventions to communicate themes.
