Learning & Teaching
Dear LPS Community,
The Balance of Learning and Enrichment at Lysterfield Primary
As the Learning and Teaching Assistant Principal at Lysterfield Primary School, my primary focus is on curriculum and student learning. Ensuring that our students receive a rich, rigorous, and coherent education is key to their learning growth and achievement. However, I also recognise the immense value of extracurricular activities in shaping well-rounded individuals. These experiences provide students with opportunities to connect, develop new skills, and apply their learning in real-world contexts.
This week has been a shining example of the breadth of experiences available to our students beyond the classroom. Our Prep students and their families gathered for the much-anticipated Teddy Bears’ Picnic—a wonderful event that allowed families to connect while reinforcing the importance of parental involvement in school life. Seeing the excitement on the students' faces as they shared this experience with their parents was a joy.
On Wednesday, I had the privilege of accompanying 20 of our student leaders to the Melbourne Primary Dream and Lead Conference at the Melbourne Convention Centre. The early morning train ride into the city was an adventure in itself, but the true highlight was the inspiring sessions and keynote speakers. A key takeaway for our leaders was that leadership is not defined by age—anyone can create meaningful change. For further insights, I encourage you to read Azalea and Alex’s reflections in the Captain's Corner section of this newsletter.
Meanwhile, some of our Grade 4 students participated in the ‘Little Scientists, Big Science’ program at John Monash Science School. This hands-on experience allowed them to explore science through experiments, activities, and challenges, sparking curiosity and a love for scientific discovery.
To cap off an exciting week, our Year 3-6 students took part in the House Athletics carnival today. This event provided students with the chance to try new sporting events, push themselves to achieve personal bests, and demonstrate resilience and house spirit. The enthusiasm and determination displayed were truly inspiring.
At Lysterfield Primary, we believe in fostering both academic excellence and personal growth. Through experiences like these, our students develop confidence, teamwork, and a passion for lifelong learning. Thank you to all staff, families, and students for making this such a fantastic week!
