Celebrating Harmony Day at POPS

Harmony Day is celebrated across Australia on March 21 each year, recognising and embracing the rich cultural diversity that makes up our nation. It is a day to promote inclusiveness, respect, and a sense of belonging for all.

Since its inception in 1999, Harmony Day has highlighted Australia’s success as a multicultural society, with more than 7.5 million people migrating here since 1945. Today, nearly half of all Australians were either born overseas or have at least one parent born overseas. The vibrant mix of cultures, languages, and traditions makes Australia a unique and thriving community.

The official colour of Harmony Day is orange, symbolising social communication, freedom of ideas, and mutual respect. To show support for cultural inclusivity, Australians are encouraged to wear orange on this special day.

At Park Orchards Primary School, we take great pride in fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for all students and families. While Harmony Day is officially observed on March 21, we make it a priority to celebrate our school’s diversity in meaningful ways throughout the year. Our students and staff engage in various activities that promote cultural awareness, appreciation, and respect for all backgrounds.

Some key facts about Australia’s diversity:

  • More than 70 Indigenous languages are spoken across the country.
  • The most common languages spoken after English include Mandarin, Arabic, Vietnamese, Italian, and Greek.
  • 85% of Australians believe multiculturalism has been beneficial for the country.

Harmony Day celebrations often include festivals, cultural performances, storytelling, and a traditional "Welcome to Country" ceremony led by local Aboriginal elders. These events highlight the importance of unity and respect in our diverse community.

By embracing and celebrating cultural diversity, POPS continues to create a safe and supportive environment where everyone feels valued and included. Let’s celebrate Harmony Day together and appreciate the unique cultures that enrich our school and our country!
