Mr Derek Lennon
It was great to see most of the boys back out participating in sport last weekend. We got the majority of cricket matches in and all of volleyball though the round in AFL was cancelled for us due to venue concerns from the flood. I want to thank our ground staff for getting McMahon, Cameron and Des Connor Park up and running for the weekend. It was a huge effort to get the boys on. Thank you also to Villanova College for their flexibility in allowing us to host a number of matches that were Villanova home games so as many boys as possible could play. Villa Park was in one of the areas badly affected by the rain from the cyclone with flooding.
Last Saturday was a good day as we hosted Villanova. Overall, in cricket, we won 12 wins and 3 losses for the day. The 1st XI, thanks to the spin twins of Archer Tallon and Joshua Pope, restricted Villa to 98 all out and we were batting before lunch. Jack Watson and Joey Laner led the way with the bat as we chased the runs 5 down. In volleyball, we had 12 wins and 8 losses with the 1st VI winning 3-1, after losing the first set the boys dominated from there to win comfortably in the end.
This weekend we host Padua in the last round of the summer season. The 1st XI cricket team are in equal first place and hunting for the premiership and the cricket program is in first place in the aggregate competition with all to play for. Good luck to all teams this weekend, especially Year 12s playing their last matches for the College.
This Friday is the rescheduled AIC Swimming Championships. The disruption from the cyclone has made this a twilight carnival this year. Once again Marist are looking good and will mount a very strong claim to the AIC title. We wish all swimmers all the best as they compete in their flagship event for the year. Thank you to the swim staff, led by Director of Swimming Mr James Boyce, for all your hard work in preparing the boys.
Pre-season continues to be the biggest challenge for sport in sharing information about upcoming events, trials and programs. Unlike the old app, to see information boys need to be registered for the activity. This can be done two terms before the AIC sports season. Term 2 and Term 3 signups are now open. Fixed documents, such as handbooks, trial details, calendars, et cetera are saved in Orbit under co-curricular/sport/name of sport. There are also links there where appropriate (such as to the AIC results website).
Signing Up- Sign in to Student Café; select Extra Curricular; select Sign-up Available; choose the sport you want to play and complete any additional fields as required.
Parent Approval- Sign in to Parent Lounge; select Extra Curricular; click Sign-up Now; select Approve Sign-Up and check and update medical details; click Accept; choose Update; click Submit to School.

AIC Swimming Championships Countdown
As we approach the AIC Swimming Championships, the excitement and anticipation at our college pool are electrifying. With just four days to go, our swimmers are training harder than ever, ready to seize their moment on the big stage.
Reflecting on the recent College Age Championships, it was incredible to see so many boys achieve personal bests across all events. The energy at the pool was outstanding, with supporters rallying behind the team, witnessing an inspiring display of skill, determination, and sportsmanship.
However, alongside the triumphs comes the reality of tough decisions. Yesterday, our AIC Swimming Squad battled it out in swim-offs for the final spots on the team—an emotional mix of celebration and heartbreak. As a coach, I’ve seen firsthand the dedication of every swimmer. To those who narrowly missed out this year, know that your hard work has not gone unnoticed. Keep pushing forward—your time is coming.
For our final team competing on Friday night, the challenge ahead is immense. St. Peter’s Lutheran College stands as a formidable rival, aiming for their ninth consecutive AIC Championship. The road to victory won’t be easy, but we are ready for the fight. Every race will come down to the final 15 meters—it’s in those moments that champions are made.
To our incredible supporters—thank you. Your presence and energy fuel our swimmers, inspiring them to dig deeper and push harder. Your cheers could make all the difference in those critical final strokes. So be loud, be proud, and help drive our team to success.
Let’s go, Marist College Ashgrove!
Mr Richard Graham – Director of Rugby / Track and Field
Marist Rugby Union | Sign On
Please go to Parent Orbit and see information regarding sign-on. All students who wish to play Term 2 sports are asked to sign up via the student café. Once your son/s have signed up all parents or caregivers MUST approve the signup via Parent Lounge and edit or update any medical details.
This assists the College in organising the appropriate number of coaching staff and delivering the necessary resources.
NOTE – If your son isn’t registered, you will NOT receive any information via the Parent Orbit regarding the rugby union program, including schedules and relevant information.
Rugby Ready Program | Year 5-12
This is the FINAL week of the 4-week Rugby Ready Program. Please continue to read the emails for all the necessary details including the program content, schedule and dress code.
Thanks to both the students for attempting to stay on the scheduled timeline throughout the storms and make-up session times, and parents/guardians who have continued to read the information. This has helped us remain on schedule and should allow all students wishing to play rugby to complete the 4 sessions and be prepared for trials.
A reminder for those students wishing to play rugby union at the College that the Rugby Ready Program is a mandatory program. I understand some students have missed sessions due to injury or illness, however, I will work with all the students to make sure you complete the program.
Please NOTE, that if a student does miss a session, please attend another session that week either a year level up or down eg. Year 8 can attend Year 7 or Year 9. There are also sessions available for ALL year levels. This ensures that a student remains on the same schedule each week as his year level and can rejoin his group the following week with a full understanding of the language, techniques required, and the physical progression.
Thanks to the coaches for volunteering their time and expertise to the program. Marist is fortunate to have many staff, old boys and current students contributing to the rugby program. We appreciate all that they do in creating a safe and challenging rugby environment.
NOTE – A reminder to any student who is swimming at the AIC Championships this Friday, please attend Rugby Ready on Monday morning. That will get you started and allow me to work with you through Week 9 and into the trials.
Blue Squad | Trial Match
Thanks to the Everton Park Roosters Rugby Union Club for hosting the Blue Squad’s trial on Sunday. The College has a long history with the club and we appreciate them allowing us to use their facilities for the trial game.
Forty-four students trialled in very hot conditions for the 1st XV and 2nd XV teams across 3 x 25-minute thirds. After a solid preseason build-up, it was great to finally see the group get the opportunity to play a game.
As expected in the first competitive hit out, the game was physical and the pressure a level above the previous semi-opposed training sessions. The effort of the students and some of the interplay was outstanding. There were a number of notable performances and it was wonderful to see so many of the squad putting their hand up early in the season to compete for a position in the 1st XV and 2nd XV.
Thanks to the staff who volunteered their time and supported the students during the trial day - Mr Chris Daykin, Mr Adam Earnshaw, and Mr Blair Whitlock; our Assistant Team Manager, Evan Smith (Year 12); our student referee, Matt Travers who ran touch line; and our four Year 7 students who were there as ball boys – Archie Greenaway, Ted Cuddihy, Joey Sullivan and Toby Dyer. Thanks also to Mrs Sonia Aldridge who captured the day with some amazing phots. All helped make it a great day at the Everton Park Roosters club.
**Any junior rugby union player looking for a club to continue their rugby pathway, please contact the Everton Park Roosters Rugby Union club situated at Hurdcotte Street, Everton Park. A friendly family club that focuses on strong ethical and family values, without sacrificing competitive football.
Rugby Union Trials
Rugby trials are almost upon us! Following the conclusion of the Rugby Ready Program at the end of Week 8, the boys will start to prepare in their Year levels for the full school internal trial on Saturday 29 March (end of Week 9). This day also serves as the Rosalie Tribute Round.
Please make sure you see the Rugby Union Key Dates Calendar in the Parent Orbit for all games throughout the season.
Marist Rugby Union | Rugby Referee Program
We are in the final week of our four-week refereeing course. Thanks to a dedicated group of Marist College Ashgrove and Mt St Michael’s students – Jameson McGahan, Connor O'Rourke, James Travers, Tom Cross, Matt Brennan, Toby Saunders, Ezzie Day, Ava Keogh; and parents, Christopher Barker, Chris Shay and Andy Marshall.
A special thank you to QRU Match Official Development Officer, Daniel Mangin, for delivering the course and making the attendees feel comfortable with the content and new challenges.
Through participating in the program, the attendees will become accredited to officiate junior rugby and have the best seat in the house.
Students who complete the course and become a referee are able to earn $25-$40 dollars per game.
Marist Rugby Union | Camps and Tours
After a hiatus since COVID, the Marist Rugby Union program is excited to reintroduce a range of camps and tours in 2025, providing students with valuable experiences in regional rugby environments. These opportunities are designed to enhance player development, strengthen team culture, build independence, and prepare squads for the upcoming season.
The following initiatives are locked in for 2025 -
Northern New South Wales Tour
1st XV and 2nd XV squad (approximately 36 students)
Games in Lennox Head and Armidale
Friday 4 – Wednesday 9, April
The Armidale School Rugby Carnival
U12 team (for logistical reasons, the squad and reserves were selected in Term 4, 2024)
Friday 11 – Sunday 13, April
Looking ahead, we aim to further expand these opportunities to include more students within our rugby union program, ensuring a broad and inclusive pathway for all aspiring players.

Queensland State Championships
Over the weekend 13-16th March at least 15 athletes from Marist competed at the QLD Track and Field Championships at the QLD State Athletics Centre. A number of these Marist athletes had continued to train well past AIC and school seasons in Nov-Dec of 2024 and many worked through the Christmas and New Year period. It was great to see some great performances from different age groups from Year 7 through to Year 12 holding us in good stead for AIC season 2025.
Please note with many of the athletes all representing different clubs, we have tried to capture as many of these athletes from the results we could find and if we have missed any names please email Mr Martin or Mr Graham so we can correct.
Medals: Marist was also on the podium at least 11 times with 3 Gold, 4 silver, 4 bronze medals. Congratulations to the medalists and to all the athletes listed below who performed with distinction.
Special Mentions: New Marist team member Dilpreet Sharma won 3 medals in the throws including Gold in discus and is looking strong in the throws in 2025 also winning silver in hammer and bronze in shot put.
Connor Campbell returned to the dais once again with an excellent gold in the 400m hurdles and silver in the sprint 110m hurdles. He has been working hard on fitness through recent months and it is paying off.
New to this level of track and field, Remi Sakzewski (Bronze javelin), Hugh Sutton(silver, 90m hurdles), Hugo Lockhart(Gold high jump) all performed brilliantly to win medals in events they had been training for with Marist coaches through Term 1. Well done!!
Hayden Lockhart qualified for nationals in 4 events winning 2 medals in 200m hurdles and triple jump and very close to a 3rd in the sprint hurdles. Lyndon Maynard winning long jump bronze was a great return given his demanding volleyball schedule in term 1.
Thanks and congratulations to Marist Old Boy and current Coach Lee Martin who supported many of the throwers in lead up training since AIC completed in 2025. Lee also won gold in the u20 shot put and will represent QLD at the upcoming National Titles in April.
