Pathways Update
Mr Paul MacCallum, Pathways
As we approach the end of Term 1, we take the time to reflect on the opportunities taken by our students and the growth they’ve experienced in their continual journey toward post-school success.
Our focus continues to be on empowering students to explore and make informed decisions about their future whether that’s through further study, career expos, career information events, apprenticeships, traineeships, VET training and courses, work experience, etc. One of the standouts this term has been the increased interest in school-based apprenticeships and traineeships across Years 10, 11 and 12. These VET options offer students an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in real work settings while earning a wage and completing a nationally recognised qualification. All while working towards their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE).
The benefits of a VET pathway are vast. They allow students to build essential skills on the job, develop industry-specific knowledge, and create valuable networks that can help them secure permanent employment in the future. In some cases, completion of a Certificate III level course can also assist with entry into some university courses. Students and parents are encouraged to explore this optional entry pathway into university study.
Work Experience: A Critical Component of Career Development
Another crucial element of career development is school-sanctioned Work Experience (WE). Through this formal arrangement, students have the opportunity to experience the world of work and gain valuable insight into specific industries while being exposed to essential skills such as communication, problem-solving, teamwork, following instructions, asking questions, punctuality, etc. WE plays an important role in building confidence while also allowing students time to refine their career interests. At St Stephen’s Catholic College, WE is expected to be conducted in school holiday periods with the best times being in the Easter, June/July and September/October school holidays. While students are strongly encouraged to complete WE in Year 10, students are also able to complete WE in Years 9, 10, 11 and 12. Please see me for the required forms to get the ball rolling and discuss any WE options.
The Benefits of Vocational Education and Training (VET) Pathways
In addition to apprenticeships, traineeships, and work experience, Vocational Education and Training (VET) pathways are another key focus for the Pathways and Careers Department. VET programs provide students with practical, job-specific training that complements their academic education. These pathways can be undertaken alongside traditional schooling and provide students with a qualification that enhances their future career prospects. We currently have a small number of students undertaking Certificate courses as stand-alone courses and as part of a traineeship.
One of the key advantages of VET is that it offers students the flexibility to specialise in areas that align with their career interests. Whether it’s in business, hospitality, information technology, health, or other vocational sectors, VET pathways equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to enter the workforce with confidence. Additionally, these programs often have strong links to industry, which means students are learning relevant and up-to-date skills that are highly valued by employers.
For many students, VET pathways also provide an alternative to university, offering a more hands-on approach to learning that suits different learning styles. Whether students choose to pursue a VET pathway directly after school or later on in their career, they are positioned to access a wide range of career opportunities with a solid foundation of practical skills
Career Information Events
Breakfast Events - the careers in Health and Manufacturing breakfast events were again popular this year with eligible students. Students were keen to explore their pathway options and also enjoy a yummy breakfast. While in Cairns, the Manufacture Your Career breakfast event was followed by an industry visit to CSF Industries in Portsmith, Cairns. We are grateful to the Business Liaison Association (BLA) of Cairns and James Cook University for organising the Careers In Health breakfast. We also thank the BLA and Cairns Manufacturing Hub for their organisation of the Manufacture Your Career breakfast.
2025 #Go Health Careers Expo
Interested Year 12 students were also keen to explore possible careers in the Health sector at the recent #GoHealth Careers Expo held in Cairns. The event was a unique collaboration between CheckUP’s Health Gateway to Industry Schools Program, Queensland Health and health organisations across Queensland. Designed as an industry immersive event, it connected students with industry leaders and opened doors to exciting jobs and careers in acute healthcare, wellness health, allied health and social services.
