‘Mind Your Language’ in Maths

Language

Language and communication in maths, plays an important role in Mathematical development and in deepening understandings. Encourage vocabulary such as more than, less than, difference between, product, sum etc. Expand on maths terminology before commencing games and tasks.

Breaking Down Maths Language used in Everyday Maths  

“Numeracy is the knowledge, skills, behaviours and dispositions that students need in order to use mathematics in a wide range of situations.”

We promote engagement for all abilities through hands on mathematics, open ended questions, real life maths tasks, while promoting a growth mindset. Mistakes and persistence are valued as integral for the growing Maths Mind.

Making Mistakes            

Mistakes are an important component of learning. They provide opportunities for new learning build resilience and assist in brain growth. Encourage questioning and praise efforts to facilitate a growth mindset.

Encourage your children to play board games, card games, domino and dice games to allow for a context in which they can explain their solutions, and model more efficient strategies.
