Learning & Teaching in Visual Arts

Prep - Throughout Term 1, the Preps have been learning about the processes of the Art room and exploring the different materials they can use to create art. They have been exploring the element of line and all the different types of lines we can use in our art. Our line lions were so cute! The Preps have been using lots of colour, focussing on primary colours and rainbow order. There are many new things to try in the Art room, and our goal is to give everything a go!
1/2 - The 1/2s have been very busy learning about using different materials in 2D art. They have focused on using different lines for different effects. They have learnt about the colour wheel, explored warm and cool colours and investigated complementary colours. We have also focused on growth mindset and how we can view mistakes as happy accidents!
3/4 - This term, our 3/4 artists have been diving into the colour wheel and exploring complementary and tertiary colours. They have had a lot of experiences mixing colours, and creating different tints and shades. They have focused on abstract art and have created a beautiful collaborative mixed media piece. During our exploration, we have been learning about different ways to respond to and talk about artworks.
5/6 - Our 5/6s have also been exploring colour and abstract artwork. They have been learning about different colour schemes including complementary and analogous colours. The students viewed the works of contemporary artist Sandra Silberzweig. They discussed her artworks and how living with synesthesia might impact the way she views the world and creates art. They used Silberzweig’s colourful artworks to inspire their own abstract portrait, focussing on composition and blending of analogous colours. Throughout the term, our 5/6 artists have been starting to learn about ways to view, discuss and interpret different artworks.
Art Club - Art Club has been so much fun this term! Each week students have been given a variety of materials and prompts and the freedom to create whatever they imagine. We have seen playdough dinners, abstract collages, crowns, pop-up cards, paintings, architectural drawings and creatures of all sorts! It’s so great to see the students choose materials that they are drawn to and create something that is all of their own design. Everyone is welcome at Art Club!
