Year 7 - 9 Community
April 2025
As Term 1 wraps up, we want to celebrate the fantastic efforts of our Year 9 students. NAPLAN was a great success, with 80% of our students completing the assessments—well done to all who participated! Our Assessment Week in Week 9 marked the end of a busy term, with students demonstrating their learning across all subjects. In Maths, we have wrapped up our Number Skills topic, while Humanities explored key historical events, including The Gold Rush and The Industrial Revolution. In English, students engaged with The Simple Gift, analyzing the theme of ‘What is Home.’ Science has also been a buzz of activity, with students finishing their study of electricity.
Beyond academics, our Year 9s have been actively engaging in school initiatives. The Student-Led Conferences were a great success, with a strong turnout from families. Our Shout Out Board continues to thrive, providing students with a chance to recognise their peers and staff for their hard work and kindness. Looking ahead, Year 9 Camp is coming up from May 26th-28th—camp notes have been sent home, so please return them if your child would like to attend. Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to another exciting term ahead!
From the Students
We sit down with the students to hear what their first term of Year 9 has been like.
Name: Abigail John
Class: 9D
Previous Campus: Peacock
How is Goldsworthy Campus different from your previous Campus?
Goldsworthy is different from peacock because you are combined with all the rest of the campus’ and unlike primary you have a different teacher and classroom with every subject.
What have you learned in your first term in Year 9?
In my first term in Year 9 I learnt about the Industrial Revolution and the Gold rush in Humanities. Scientific notation, index law, Place value, LCM, HCF in Maths. Electricity in Science, and for English we are studying the book, The Simple Gift.
What has been challenging about starting at Goldsworthy?
What’s been challenging at Goldsworthy was that on Monday to Thursday you have all double periods and on Friday you have singles of every one of your subjects including electives.
Do you have any advise for students starting at Goldsworthy?
My advice for new students is that you shouldn’t really be worried about starting here because most of the students are welcoming.
What are you looking forward to in Term 2?
I'm definitely looking forward to the year 9 camp in May.
Curriculum Program Report
English
Students are well into the class novel study for the term. Peacock and Hendy students are studying ‘Trash’, Tallis ‘Once’ and Wexford ‘The Happiest Refugee’ . Students have been answering comprehension questions, making text to self/text/world connections and exploring the main ideas and themes. We have also completed our first Cold Write for the year which was a narrative piece. The writing produced included high level vocabulary and punctuation. The writing ideas were varied and interesting. It was a pleasure to see students producing their personal best.
Maths
In Maths students have been using the Maths Pathways program. They have completed their first test so hopefully they have shared their results with their family. We have continued to include the LES problem solving approach. Students are becoming more confident to try different strategies and to explain their thinking with their peers.
Humanities
In Humanities we have started in the area of Civics and Citizenship with an inquiry into ‘What does justice and law look like in Australia?’ Students have particularly enjoyed looking at case studies and debating whether the trial and outcome were fair. They will be completing an oral presentation on a chosen case study to their class before the term ends.
