A big thank you to Nestor from CCV, City of Greater Geelong and Kat Essex who all supported a group of our extraordinary young people to engage with a vape prevention proposal project. We had the privilege yesterday of witnessing their proposals and voted on the winning group – Freshta, Fatima and Medhi!
A run down of the day itself - Written by Fatimah Alsowadi & Mehdi Mohammad Aref
Lunch began and people from all over the campus started to show up, the year 10s and even the new year nines. The school captains were also there with Mr Diamond and Ms Prendergast The vice captain Tyler Collins was also present, communicating openly with the students in the room and by the end, collecting the votes from every member for each campaign. Additionally Ms Magda, Ms Sophie, the wellbeing team, a few members of the fort and Mr Nester were all present and made great effort to attend this program, they brought nothing but positivity.
The MCs Hunter, Pascaline and Mohammad did an excellent job on introducing us and starting everyone off. The first campaign to speak was Pascaline and Yo cho ya (group 1), presented us with an extremely good slide show and a clear five min presentation with amazing posters of the idea to broadcast their presentation to a broader audience to prevent from e-cigarettes statistics from increasing. The second campaign to speak was our group Freshta, Fatimah and Mehdi. It was quite nerve-racking but we presented our idea of creating posters and popping them up everywhere such as bathrooms and the bulletin, and furthermore try to prevent the usage of vapes across the school and whole Geelong. our idea and pitch was shown with the interaction of our audience and colourful posters, with further explanation. Last but not least the campaign, Hunter, Mohammad and Rezai were welcomed on stage to speak on the effects of vaping, they’re project was to create and work on a video, therefore to understand the dangers of e-cigarettes in a visual diagram. Group 3 (Hunter, Rezai, and Mohammed) also presented some eye-catching posters. They had a wonderful speech with a strong punch line at the end to bring it all together. After their pitch it was discussion time and the members got to cast one vote on the campaign with the grested ideas and speech. (Tyler was collecting votes from the members and the captains were speaking to the students in the room). After the discussion, Ms Prendergast gave a short speech on benefits of this program and announced the winning team with the most votes, which was Freshta, Fatimah and Mehdi. When we heard the news we were in utter shock due to the fact that the other groups had such wonderful ideas and pitches. We thanked them and were grateful for such opportunities to be able to speak on a serious topic such as vaping and have the support to act and promote to stop it or even decrease it to our best ability.
Student Leaders
Our leaders have been off to a busy start with Miss Ormeno, this team having held weekly meetings to get together and make our school a better place. Every two weeks our college captains have also been meeting with leaders from Wexford, Talos, Hendy & Peacock, guiding them on their leadership journey.
Currently our year 12 leaders have started a gratitude wall focusing on our school value of kindness as well as gathering indoor plants to decorate our study area, aiming to make the space more comfortable.
Student Achievement
Teachers have been keeping a keen eye out for students that can be awarded an achievement chronicle for our four school values! Our current Achievements Leaderboard is below. The year 11’s are leading the charge! One other celebration is the amount of VCE students currently still sitting on 100% attendance.
Homework Club
Homework club is being run on Mondays, Tuesdays & Thursdays between 3:10pm & 4:30pm. This opportunity has continued to be populated with VCE students not only continuing their positive study habits but also working collaboratively to push each other.
