French Impressionism Exhibition

On Monday 11 August, students of Years 9 and 10 French attended the winter masterpieces “French Impressionism” Exhibition at the NGV.

Drawn from MFA Boston’s rich collection of Impressionist masterworks, “French Impressionism” presents more than 100 paintings by key figures including Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, Édouard Manet, Mary Cassatt, Berthe Morisot, Paul Signac and Alfred Sisley. Our French students really enjoyed their time in the Gallery and look forward to trying some Impressionist painting techniques back in the classroom this week. Here are some student “impressions” from the day:

Going to the NGV to see the French Impressionist exhibition was a great experience. The paintings were incredible, and it was a nice way to spend the day. I would definitely recommend going to see the expo while it is in the NGV. It was a lovely day for it and the teachers were amazing managing all of those kids at once. It was amazing to see such talent and history through the paintings.

Brianna Liss (Everard House) - Year 9

I found the experience to the NGV to see the French Impressionists exhibition really exciting and a great insight into the French culture of art. As we travelled through the different rooms with each of the rooms being a different colour we really got to immerse ourselves into the different time periods of French history. I also loved how depending on the colour of each room the paintings would match that theme. For example, My favourite room was the light pink room with all of the detailed flower paintings. Overall it was a great experience and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Charlee Doherty (Everard House) - Year 9

When we entered the NGV, it was very 7 extravagant and every room had a different colour. We also noticed that the wall colours matched with the art pieces, and as you walked through the various rooms, it was like walking through different periods. The art was very surreal to look at, and each artist had a distinct personality that was expressed through their work.

Sophia Vivado (Toner House), Ronika Adel Mehraben (Skipper House)

and Annabelle Lowe (Everard House) - Year 9

On 11 August all of the Year 9 and 10 French classes took place in the city to go to the French impressionism gallery display at the national gallery of Victoria (NGV). The Exhibition featured the works of big French artistry names such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, Berthe Morisot and the famous Claude Monet also known as the father of French Impressionism. It was interesting to see how each individual artist’s idea of France at the time varied. How perspectives change and as the saying goes beauty in in the eye of the beholder. I found some of the standouts that I was astounded by were the pieces Still Life with Roses (Édouard Manet), Degas' Father Listening to Lorenzo Pagans Playing the Guitar (Auguste De Gas) and The Water Lily Pond (Claude Monet).
