Science Week 2025

National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology.
Established in 1997, National Science Week provides an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of Australian scientists to the world of knowledge. It also aims to encourage an interest in science pursuits among the general public and to encourage younger people to be fascinated by the world we live in.
At Oatlands we are very lucky to have a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) Specialist Program, as well as classroom learning experiences that students engage in regularly, to learn about all things Science!
This week is Science Week!
Here are all the fun things our students will be engaging in:
in our STEM Program students will be focusing on Earth and its resources. This connects to the Earth and Space Sciences Curriculum.
Students are learning about water, The Water Cycle, Earth’s surfaces, extreme weather conditions and events and how we can look after our environment.
Following this, in Week 5, our STEM Teachers will be offering lunchtime activities that will extend students learning of Earth and Space.
Student will:
have the opportunity to grow and test ‘space food’
Plants help create a healthy environment for astronauts
They produce oxygen to breathe and remove carbon dioxide from the air
They provide fresh food filled with important vitamins
They make medicines and materials
They help astronauts feel feel happy when they see green leaves and bright flowers and assist them in feeling more connected to Earth - all very important for long space missions and for living on the Moon or Mars - that’s why we take care of plants on Earth and want to grow them in space too!
We look forward to delving deeper into our Earth and Space Units over the coming weeks!
