Strengthening Teaching Through Assessment

As we enter Week 7 of Term 3, our teaching staff are beginning to consolidate their professional learning from this term, which has centred around building a Guaranteed and Viable Curriculum (GVC).
This week, our focus turns to the vital role of assessment in supporting student learning. Staff are exploring the benefits of planning both formative and summative assessments as an integral part of each unit of work.
By intentionally incorporating a range of assessments—such as checks for understanding, exit slips, and more formal end-of-unit tasks—teachers can:
- Monitor student progress throughout the learning process
- Adjust instruction to better meet individual needs
- Provide meaningful feedback to guide improvement
- Ensure that all students are working towards clear learning goals
Planning for both formative and summative assessment from the outset ensures that assessment is purposeful, timely, and directly aligned with learning objectives.
This work reflects our ongoing commitment to high-quality teaching that supports every student’s growth.
