Debating Round 3

This week, our Debate Team faced off against Greenwich Public School in the third round of the season. Once again, we encountered strong competition, with both teams passionately engaging in the topic of media and screens.

The Year 6 team, comprising Yina, Sunnie, Nikita, and Richelle, debated the motion: "That Year 5 and 6 kids should do all their schoolwork on a screen instead of using textbooks and paper." After Greenwich won the toss, our team was placed on the negative side. As has been the case throughout the season, the debate was a thrilling contest with both sides presenting well-reasoned and compelling arguments. Ultimately, our Year 6 team emerged victorious, securing a hard-earned win.

Next, the Year 5 team, Lyan, Adayr, and Yanxi, with special thanks to Jolene for stepping in for Elodie, tackled the challenging topic: "That we should ban kids under 12 from ever playing any kind of game on screen." Considering the significant influence of video games on children today, this was a tough motion to argue. Greenwich won the toss again, so our team took the negative position. Despite a strong opening case from Greenwich’s first speaker, our team responded with thoughtful rebuttals. In the end, however, Greenwich secured their fourth victory and a place in this year’s regional knockout competition.

Looking ahead, we have one more round this term: a Year 5 versus Year 6 debate on the topic of Health and Fitness, scheduled for the next two weeks. We will be sure to update you on the results.

Please join me in congratulating both teams for their hard work, dedication, and sportsmanship. We look forward to an exciting final round, with Year 6 aiming for their second win and Year 5 eager to claim victory from their senior peers. Stay tuned!
