Be Kind, Be safe, Be respectful, Be responsible, Be resilient, Be ready
Dear Parents and Carers,
This Sunday we welcome Bishop Greg to our Parish as he celebrates the Sacrament of Confirmation with members of our Parish Community. But what is the Sacrament of Confirmation? The Sacrament of Confirmation confirms the Gift of the Holy Spirit which was given at Baptism.
Sacraments are ways in which we experience God’s love, healing, forgiveness, nourishment and strengthening. There are seven official sacraments in the Catholic Church. However, the most fundamental sacrament in our Church is Jesus. Jesus became a physical human being so that we could come to know the unseen God. Jesus, in his human form, helps us to know God, in God’s divine form. Jesus is the sacrament par excellence.
The seven formal Sacraments in the Catholic church consist of three Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Eucharist/Communion and Confirmation, two Sacraments of Healing: Reconciliation/Penance and Anointing of the Sick and two Sacraments of Commitment/Service: Marriage and Holy Orders.
Confirmation is the second of the Sacraments of Initiation. It is closely related to Baptism and leads to the Eucharist which expresses full belonging to the Church, the body of Christ. Hence it is called a sacrament of initiation.
What happens during the Sacrament of Confirmation?
The Sacrament of Confirmation consists of the renewal of baptismal promises and the laying on of hands and anointing with the oil of Chrism. The anointing of the candidate is a sign of confirming the gift of the Spirit, and calls the candidates to use these gifts to become involved in the life and mission of the community.
The Gifts of the Holy Spirit
In the Bible, the sending of the Holy Spirit is found in Acts 2:1-13. This is called the Pentecost event. The Gifts of the Spirit (wisdom, understanding, right judgement/counsel, courage/fortitude, knowledge, reverence/piety, wonder and awe/fear of the Lord) are found in Scripture.
Spirit of wisdom......Make me wise
Spirit of courage......Strengthen me
Spirit of right judgement...Guide my thoughts
Spirit of understanding.......Enlighten me
Spirit of reverence..........Teach me respect
Spirit of knowledge..........Inspire me
Spirit of wonder and awe....Help me find you in all things
The Fruits of the Holy Spirit
The Fruits of the Holy Spirit are love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness and self-control. These Fruits are the Gifts in action.
Keep smiling
Cathy
