Year 10 Geography Camp in Kangaroo Island

In Week 3, Year 10 Geography students visited Kangaroo Island to explore its competing priorities and investigate whether they are being pursued at the expense of its pristine natural environment.

During the camp, students met with local experts who shared stories of how Kangaroo Island is changing and its challenges. One of our guides took us to her property and spoke personally about the pressures on the neighbouring land, which was once set aside for conservation but is now threatened by a proposed tourism development. This fueled interesting discussions about planning decisions on the island and how tourism growth can be managed sustainably. Students also saw first-hand the complexities of managing the controversial Tasmanian Blue Gum plantations and controlling beach driving along critical nesting sites.

Highlights of the camp also included a visit to Remarkable Rocks and Admiral’s Arch, a guided beach tour at Seal Bay with close encounters with sea lion pups, Little Sahara Sand Boarding and Stokes Bay.

Year 11 Geography Excursion

In Week 4, Year 11 Geography students visited the Adelaide Hills to investigate whether the Adelaide Hills is adequately prepared for the upcoming bushfire season.

At Belair National Park and Mark Oliphant Conservation Park, students assessed the hazard posed by different fuel layers in the forest. The students used techniques employed by professionals to identify areas for future prescribed burns. Students also visited some of the surrounding neighbourhoods to evaluate strategies used by households to prepare for bushfires.

The first student to spot a koala was promised a chocolate bar, so it was much to the students’ disappointment when I noticed the first (and only) koala in a tree above our heads!
