Gospel Reflection

19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Summary

In this Gospel, Jesus tells His disciples that He has come to bring “fire on the earth” — the fire of God’s love and truth. He warns that following Him will not always bring peace, but can sometimes cause division, even within families, because living faithfully means making choices that not everyone will agree with.

Gospel Reading: Luke 12:49–53

Jesus said to His disciples: “I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! I have a baptism with which to be baptised, and what stress I am under until it is completed! Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division! From now on five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three; they will be divided: father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

Reflection

Jesus’ words remind us that being His follower is not always easy. Living by God’s truth and love can sometimes challenge others — even those close to us. Choosing to stand for what is right, just, and loving may cause tension, but Jesus calls us to remain faithful, trusting that His fire is a purifying love that transforms the world. In our own lives, we are invited to be brave in our faith, to speak with love, and to act with integrity, even when it is not the popular choice.

Family reflection prompts:

  • What do you think Jesus means when He says He came to bring “fire” to the earth?
  • Has there ever been a time when following Jesus meant making a hard or unpopular choice?
  • How can we speak the truth with love, even when it’s difficult?
  • What helps you keep your faith strong when others don’t understand or agree with you?
  • How can you share Jesus’ love in your family, school, and community this week?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, give us the courage to follow You even when it is difficult. Help us to speak the truth with love, to act with compassion, and to keep Your fire of faith alive in our hearts. May we be a light to others and bring Your love into every part of our lives.

Amen.

Feast of the Assumption – August 15th

The Feast of the Assumption, celebrated each year on 15 August, marks the moment when Mary, the mother of Jesus, was taken into heaven—body and soul—at the end of her life. It’s a sign of the special place Mary has with God because of her deep faith and love. This feast reminds us that God promises eternal life to all who follow Him.

Who is Mary?

Mary is the mother of Jesus and is loved and honoured by Catholics all around the world. She trusted God completely and said “yes” when the angel told her she would have His Son. Mary shows us how to live with faith, kindness, and courage. She is often called our spiritual mother because she cares for us and prays for us, just like she cared for Jesus.

The Story of the Assumption

This short video explains that the Assumption of Mary is the belief that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was taken all the way up to heaven - body and soul - at the end of her life. It helps us understand that Mary has a special place with God and shows us that our own bodies and spirits are precious in God’s eyes.

Reflection Questions

  1. Why do you think Mary being taken to heaven “body and soul” is important?
  2. How does Mary’s Assumption help us hope for heaven one day too?
  3. What do you feel when you think of Mary with God in heaven? What might you say to her if you could?
