Team Spirit is Our Competitive Edge
We kicked off a busy term of sport on Tuesday, 29 July, as our Futsal players took to the indoor courts at MSAC for a full day of competition.
Our Juniors came out hot against some competitive sides and despite taking a game to find their groove, had a strong run of games across the group stages. The girls gelled well as a team, with some experienced footballers in both attack and defense, meaning the girls looked strong on the pitch. A few superb goals from Madeleine McLachlan and Angela Matic and some stellar saves from Goal Keepers Brigid Govan and Vicky Dang meant that the juniors finished top 4 and progressed to the semi finals. Despite a close game and a draw at full time, the girls sadly lost 3-1 on penalties. A special mention to Sophie Fitzsimon, who did a great job in the tough and high pressure task of being Goalie.
Our Intermediate team faired in a similar fashion - a slower start but a big improvement in performance and team cohesion as the day went on. A special mention goes to Christen Mercuri who stepped up to be Keeper on the day and to Olivia McLachlan for sinking goal after goal in the group stages. The girls’ determination and team work meant that they too, finished top 4 and progressed to the semi-finals. A close and well fought game meant that it was tight at half time, but a couple of lucky goals from their opponents, Santa Maria, meant the game finished at 4-2 and the Intermediate team were knocked out.
Our Senior team had a number of players new to Futsal, who tackled the competition head on and with confidence. The girls were highly supportive of one another and worked hard to listen to coach, Mr Odachowski’s direction and instruction. Although the girls did not progress past the group stages, they all reported having a great day, which was only improved by bumping into the St Kilda AFL players as they left!
A great day for all of the teams, well done to all of the students who participated.
Following the success of the 2024 mixed netball series, the ACC were back, bringing together the all-girls and all-boys Catholic schools from the area for another action packed day of sport.
Our partner school Simonds Catholic College, headed over to Academy for a number of training sessions in the lead up to the event - giving the girls and the boys a chance to get to know one another… and in some cases, learn the rules!
On the day, the teams of 5 boys and 5 girls had an action packed schedule, coming up against some tough competition. A few losses and some great successes, but a great day of team work, collaboration and above all, fun.
A special mention to Helen Fleming who helped coach the boys and to Alice Moffat for sinking goal after goal on the day.
Academy’s favorite sport is back- Volleyball! The girls got straight down to work at the start of Term 3, training with past-student coaches Kaija, Sienna and Fran to prepare for the competition on 13 August.
A big day on the courts for all three age groups. Our juniors, mostly all new to the sport, showed tenacity and competitive spirit against some tough competition. Despite not making it to finals, the coaches reported that all of the girls improved as the day went on.
A special mention to Eva Rozek, who won the most improved of the day.
Our Intermediates, who have had a couple of run outs at Volleyball competitions, had a tough day with some challenging competitors. A couple of wins however, was all they needed to boost morale and to keep their heads in the game.
Some great performances and some wonderful team spirit from the girls, great job!
Our seasoned veterans, the seniors, who have lots of experience on the court, started strong and finished strong. The A team dominated the division and ended up coming away with the winners trophy!
A special mention to Aoife Greenwood, who won Grand Final MVP. A big well done to all of the students who participated on the day.
