A Spotlight on Learning in the JLC on Heights Campus
What’s Happening in the JLC…
What a fantastic Term 3 we’ve had so far!
In Mathematics, our focus has been on addition and subtraction. Students have been exploring a variety of strategies to solve problems confidently and accurately. These include counting on, counting up, counting back, using number facts and applying the "add/subtract 10" strategy. It’s been great to see students developing their fluency and applying these strategies independently.
In Reading, we’ve been learning about visualising, which is the ability to create mental images based on what we read. This helps students engage more deeply with a text and improves their comprehension. They have also practised answering literal questions by skimming and scanning for information, and inferential questions by using prior knowledge and clues from both the text and illustrations. These approaches have strengthened their overall understanding and ability to talk meaningfully about what they read. Speaking of reading, Book Week was also a big hit, with many creative costumes and happy faces taking part in our annual Book Week Parade. What an adventurous day!
In Writing, students began the term by learning how to create persuasive texts. They chose a side on a given topic and developed three clear arguments to support their opinion, using their own reasoning and voice. We have now transitioned into descriptive writing, where the focus is on painting vivid pictures with words. Students are learning to use adjectives, verbs and similes or comparisons to add depth and interest to their writing.
Last of all, swimming has been an absolute highlight! Students have shown great independence in managing their self-help skills as they get dressed and undressed each day. They’ve embraced the program with enthusiasm, showing eagerness to improve their swimming abilities and learn more about water safety!
