Year 8 Hockey: District Champions!
It was a warm, sunny spring day when our Year 8 Hockey team arrived at the Hawthorn Hockey Club for an exciting day of competition against some top teams: Mckinnon, Bentleigh, and Beaumaris. Mckinnon, the powerhouse of the district, was definitely the team to beat this year, especially after their impressive performance at the state championships last year.
Brighton started the day strong with a gutsy effort in the first game, despite being short-handed with no goalie and only 10 players on the field. They fought hard but ended up losing 3-1. After that, the team was ready to bounce back.
In the next two matches against Bentleigh and Beaumaris, standout performances from Chris Sellars and Nyah Maddison helped Brighton cruise to comfortable wins, setting up a final showdown with Mckinnon.
The final was a nail-biter from start to finish. Chris Sellars opened the scoring for Brighton with a brilliant solo run to put the ball past the Mckinnon goalkeeper. But the district champions weren’t going to go down easy, and they equalised just before halftime, making it 1-1.
The second half was a true test of endurance as both teams battled it out with relentless running. With standout performances from Henry Reiser and Alex Wang on the wings, Brighton continued to hold off Mckinnon’s attacks.
In the final moments, Chris Sellars again made his mark, scoring a fantastic goal to put Brighton 2-1 ahead. The team held their ground in the final minutes, with brilliant defensive work from Oliver Brady, Dexter Wintle, Neo Lu, and Maleck Marouff. When the final whistle blew, the team erupted in joy – they had overcome all odds to be crowned district champions!
Now, we’re all looking forward to the regional round robin in Term 4. A huge congratulations to our Year 8 Hockey team – what a performance!
Year 7 Hockey: Off to Regionals!
It was a cloudy yet warm September day when the Year 7 Hockey team took to the field at the Hawthorn Hockey Club for a big round robin event against Beaumaris, Bentleigh, Mckinnon, and Mordialloc.
Brighton's first match was against Mckinnon, but due to scheduling, the game was cut short to one half. Despite having no warm-up and limited prep time, the Year 7s showed amazing determination, beating Mckinnon 1-0.
Next up, Brighton faced Beaumaris and Bentleigh. The team, led by midfield maestros like Rhys Fitzgerald and Phoebe Mclaughlin, controlled the game from the middle of the field, making it hard for the opposition to break through. Up front, Ethan Liley, Isaac Wright-Duncan, Charlie Ferguson, and Ayaan Khanna were on fire, scoring goal after goal. On the defensive side, Alexandra Korol, Henry Hutchinson, and Jinky Ketels provided solid coverage, while Xavier Sellenger, Alyssa Trauernicht and Josh in goal kept the opposition from getting any serious scoring opportunities.
Although there were no official finals due to scheduling changes, Brighton’s final game was a thrilling encounter against Mordialloc. Both teams had won all their previous matches, so this was essentially a “final.” It was a tough, fiery contest, but the Year 7s showed incredible skill and teamwork to win 3-1, earning themselves a spot in the regional round robin!
Congratulations to the Year 7 Hockey team – off to regionals we go!

Tournament Highlights
The Intermediate Boys B team provided one of the most exciting finishes of the day. In their final match against Westall, the game came down to the last 30 seconds. Hamish nailed a clutch three-pointer, followed by a fast break where Ethyn set up Liev for a quick layup. The crowd erupted, and the boys celebrated a well-earned win.
Beyond the results, the atmosphere throughout the day was a highlight. Players supported each other from the sidelines, cheering loudly and creating a strong sense of squad unity.
Preparation and Commitment
Coaches Mr. Pease and Mr. Trytell were especially impressed with the dedication shown by the Intermediate Boys squad. In the lead-up to the event, players took part in extra training sessions to sharpen their fundamentals, build team chemistry, and learn set plays. This commitment was clear to see on the court.
Acknowledgements
