Zoo Excursion
Year 9 Humanities
Our Year 9 Humanities and Year 8 I&E students recently enjoyed an engaging and memorable excursion to the Melbourne Zoo. The day provided a unique opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world experiences, exploring themes of environment, sustainability, and human interaction with the natural world.
Students moved through a wide variety of enclosures, observing animals from across the globe and considering the importance of conservation efforts in protecting these species. From the majesty of the lions to the curiosity of the meerkats, every enclosure offered a chance to reflect on the relationships between animals, their habitats, and human responsibility in safeguarding biodiversity.
The giraffes were a particular highlight, with their towering presence and graceful movements capturing the attention of the entire group. Equally captivating was the Butterfly House, where students walked among hundreds of delicate butterflies in a tropical environment, marvelling at their vivid colours and gentle flight. Some even landed on our students for closer inspections!
The excursion not only deepened students’ understanding of key Humanities concepts but also fostered a sense of appreciation for wildlife and the vital role zoos play in education and conservation. It was a day of learning, reflection, and inspiration that will stay with students long after their visit.
