Cricket Chips!?

Year 12 Food S

Recently, our Year 12 Food Studies students took part in a unique and eye-opening sensory evaluation activity as part of their studies into environmental sustainability in food production.

With all products generously supplied by Circle Harvest, students compared traditional corn chips with chips made using cricket flour – a sustainable, high-protein alternative that requires significantly less land, water and resources than traditional grain or animal-based proteins.

The tasting didn’t stop there! Students also sampled some adventurous treats, including Mealworms with Lemon Myrtle flavouring and even Ant Candy. While the thought of eating insects might be daunting at first, our students demonstrated incredible bravery, curiosity, and open-mindedness. Many reflected on how these products challenged their expectations and pushed them outside their comfort zones.

The activity sparked valuable discussions around the role of alternative proteins in feeding a growing population, and how factors like taste, ethics, price and environmental impact influence consumer food choices.
