Principal's Message

Student Leadership

On September 4th and 5th approximately 50 of our students ranging from Year 7 to Year 11 participated in our Leadership Camp, facilitated by our Year 12 Leadership team, and Liz Bolton, head of Student Voice, Agency and Leadership, and including a range of guest speakers, two of whom were previous School Captains at BSC.

I was given the privilege of being the first speaker on the camp and posed the question “What does Leadership look like?”. Mindful that my audience was likely shy, being at an unfamiliar venue, the Brighton Life Saving Club, with a mixed cohort ranging from Year 7s to Year 11s I front-loaded the question with one of the themes for the camp; Step Up, Step Out (step up to the challenge; step out of your comfort zone), what followed was truly awe inspiring.

There would have been more than 20 responses from the students, with every response being considered, detailed and clearly communicated, every response was unique, identifying a different element of leadership and many of those leadership attributes were being demonstrated in real-time, the courage of the first speaker, the respectful and active listening of each student, and the collaboration of building on the responses of one another.

Whilst I was unable to stay for the entirety of the leadership camp, I was left so optimistic for the bright future that we have at BSC, with such a strong through line of amazing young people to continue to add value and enrich our school community.

Earlier this week, at our whole-school assembly, we introduced our 2026 College Captain team to our community, and I am excited and grateful for the opportunity to work with these outstanding young leaders; College Captains, Sienna Davis and Isabella Kryebel, and the broader captain team, Daisy Moore, Ariana He and Dimitri Giazi.

Whilst the year and their responsibilities are not yet finished, I want to also acknowledge and thank the exceptional leadership team of 2025, Captains Madison Stewart and Malachy True, and the captain team Mason Hancox, Andrew Widjaja and Vanshika Thakkar. It has been a privilege to work with such capable, driven and committed leaders; and it has been a lot of fun!

To the 2025 Captain team, and to all of our Year 12 students, you are so close to the end of Secondary Schooling journey, make sure that you make the last couple of months count!

Ensure that you’re studying hard during the Term 3 break, but also ensure that you take some time to relax and wind down. Putting in a strong 4-5 hours of quality revision each day of the holidays, with your phone turned off and your attention fixed solely on your study will hold you in good stead as you move towards your exams.

To the whole community, have a safe and restful break.

Peter Langham,

Principal
