This Sunday’s Gospel:
A reading from the Gospel of John (3:13-17)
No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man. Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.”
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
The Gospel of the Lord
All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
REFLECTION:
In this powerful passage, Jesus speaks of His mission in the world—a mission grounded in love, sacrifice, and salvation. He begins by recalling a strange and beautiful moment from the Old Testament: when Moses lifted up a bronze serpent in the wilderness so that the people of Israel, plagued by deadly bites, could look upon it and be healed. In the same way, Jesus says, “the Son of Man must be lifted up” so that all who look to Him in faith may have eternal life.
This lifting up is more than just physical—it is both a crucifixion and an exaltation. On the cross, Jesus is lifted in suffering and shame, but at the same time, He is lifted in glory, revealing the depth of God’s love. The cross becomes not a symbol of defeat, but a doorway to salvation.
The heart of this reading lies in John 3:16, one of the most beloved verses in all of Scripture: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son…”
