Prep/1 Classroom News

This term, our Prep and Year 1 students explored the much-loved Roald Dahl classic George’s Marvellous Medicine. The story follows George, a curious boy who decides to make his own medicine for his grumpy and unkind grandmother. Instead of curing her bad temper, his wild concoction causes some very surprising – and hilarious – transformations, including animals growing to unusual sizes!

Throughout the unit, students engaged with the story’s key themes, such as imagination, problem solving, and the consequences of our actions. They also discussed the way Roald Dahl used humour, exaggeration, and unexpected twists to entertain readers and keep them laughing along the way.

To bring the story to life, students created a range of artworks inspired by George’s adventure. These included colourful chickens with extra-long legs, potion and ingredient bottles filled with imaginative mixtures, and illustrated sentences describing why they enjoyed the story. The artworks celebrated the children’s creativity and showcased how much fun they had diving into the world of Roald Dahl.

Here are some thoughts from the students about the novel after reading it together;

'I liked it when the chicken grew so big!' - Reegan.

'I liked it when the chicken grew long legs!' - Marlee.

'I loved it when the grandma grew small!' - Adam.

'It was funny when grandma grew tiny, and Mrs Kranky didn't know where she was.' - Oliver.

'It was funny when the grandma jumped on the pony!' - Alaska.

'I liked when the chicken grew small.' - Braxx.

'I liked it when grandma did a front flip and landed on the ground.' - Patrick.

'I liked it when grandma had to sleep in the hay barn, because she was too big to sleep in the house!' - Daisy.
