Inquiry - Geography - A diverse and connected world

We have moved our inquiry focus to geography where in the last couple of weeks  our class has been looking at the world and it's continents. Our focus is now turning to the Asia region.

Literacy

We are coming to the conclusion in our class text -'The One and Only Ivan'

We have been able to drive much of our literacy content from this book looking at curriculum areas such as contextual clues for unfamiliar words, comprehension strategies to analyse information, the connection between the tone of a passage and the narration, actions and dialogue that dictates this tone.

Students oral reading fluency and confidence to read aloud has anecdotally also improved, using a variety of echo, coral, group and paired reading from the text.

Mathematics

We have continued working on our automatic response and recall for table number facts.

We have explored using the number break up strategy for both subtraction and multiplication of up to 3 digit numbers, including decimals. Along with this, students examined doubling and halving strategies to solve mutlipcation problems e.g 6 x 15 or 3 x 30

Our class has also explored decimal estimation and subtraction using walks and measurement of the basketball court.

This week our class has moved into transformation of 2D shapes using rotation, reflection and translation.

Swimming

Congratulations to students who particpated in the swim program. Research tells us that the quickest and greatest improvements come from a program like the one we have just conducted.

However, one week does not make a component swimmer with survival strokes sufficiently developed. I like to think of the program just concluded as a platform to launch from.

The greatest impact or leverage from the program that can be delivered, is if students now embark on a regular swim program, if they are not already doing so.  To make your child water safe is a sensational gift to give.

Term 4

This is a big term for our class with the excitement building of Grade 6's about to graduate and move on to the next phase of their schooling paired with various events such as Bike Education. It is also a time when excitement at the prospect of these events and anticipation for what lays ahead ferments into a nervous energy throughout the cohort.

It is important that students keep following school rules and expectations. This is when leadership transition for all other students in the school is modelled on Grade 6 behaviour in their role as senior students.
