A Year of Musical Excellence

Tanya Roberts, Learning Support Teacher

As we approach the end of the term, we reflect on the truly inspiring impact and scale of our DCC music program. By the end of this year, we will have delivered over 11,000 private lessons, including 1,216 shared sessions, alongside 1,456 lessons through our Instrumental Bands and Strings Instrumental introductory programs. These numbers reflect the dedication of our tutors and the enthusiasm of our students, who continue to grow in skill and confidence.

Our ensemble program remains a cornerstone of the music experience, with 29 ensembles rehearsing weekly. These groups contribute to an estimated 986 hours of rehearsal time across the year, involving approximately 660 students each week. The sense of community and collaboration fostered through ensemble work is one of the music program’s greatest strengths.

Performance achievements to date have been outstanding. At the Victorian Schools Music Festival (VSMF), our ensembles earned no less than silver, with many receiving gold and platinum awards. Several students also participated in Generations in Jazz, gaining valuable exposure to professional performance environments and learning from worldwide industry leaders.

Concerts have been a highlight of the calendar, offering students the chance to showcase their talents to the wider school community. Two major events - Celebration of Sound in Term 2 and Celebration of Song in Term 3 featured all instrumental ensembles, choirs, and secondary worship bands. These concerts were complemented by a three-part concert series: Bands Night, Strings Night, and Jazz Night, each providing a focused platform for genre-specific performances.

To support student development and exam preparation, the program ran a Recital Series, including Lunchbox Concerts and VCE Recitals. These opportunities helped students refine their performance skills and build confidence. The results speak for themselves: 251 students sat AMEB, ANZCA, and St Cecilia exams, achieving a 100% pass rate.

Our facilities continue to support this excellence, with 15 tutor rooms - including four with pianos and four with keyboards, as well as dedicated wings for strings, brass, and percussion. These spaces provide tailored environments for focused learning.

Looking ahead, Headstart begins in Week 8 of Term 4, launching the 2026 ensemble groups. This initiative allows students to transition smoothly into the next stage of their musical journey, setting the tone for another exciting year ahead.

Thank you to all students, tutors, and families for making this year one of inspiration, achievement, and joy.

Here's to another year of music-making!
