Careers News

This month many of our Year 12 students have been busy working on their VTAC Applications at https://vtac.edu.au/. This process allows students to apply to attend Victorian Universities in 2026 or to defer offers until 2027.

Students have attended a series of presentations run by the Careers Team that have taken them through the process of applying. For students who weren’t able to attend, this information is being shared on Teams and students are being encouraged to make appointments with the Neighbourhood Careers Practitioner.

VTAC Key Dates

4th August – Applications Open

29th September – Timely Applications Close (it becomes more expensive after this)

10th October – Equity (SEAS) and Scholarships Applications Close

11th December – Results and ATARs Available

23rd December – Offer Rounds Start

Students who haven’t already done so are encouraged to ensure they have started their Equity and Scholarships Applications. This critical date is non-negotiable and many students will need to locate documentation and make medical appointments as part of the process.

🚀 Ganbina Year 7 Industry Tours: Exploring Careers Up Close! 🚀

Recently, a group of curious Year 7 students had an amazing opportunity to explore three local workplaces, thanks to industry tours coordinated by Ganbina.

Students visited Kmart, Coles, and Officeworks, where they got an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at how these businesses operate. They heard directly from staff who shared their personal career journeys, insights into the highest-selling products, workplace safety risks, potential salaries, and exciting opportunities available for young people within their organizations.

The students were especially thrilled when Kmart treated them to a goodie bag, because, let’s be honest, who doesn’t love freebies?

A huge shoutout and thank you to Nikkia and Katrina from Ganbina, the friendly staff at Kmart, Coles, and Officeworks, and the Careers and Partnership team for making this inspiring experience happen!

Year 11 Employer Panel – A Heartfelt Thank You

At GSSC, we are immensely grateful to our local employers and community organisations who generously dedicate their time to engage with our students. Their invaluable insights and shared opportunities play a vital role in guiding our students on their diverse pathways, whether that be University, TAFE, gap years, or direct entry into the workforce.

We extend our sincere thanks to past GSSC alumni Rowan Farren from Goulburn Valley Health, Michael Carrafa from Greater Shepparton City Council, and Jeremy Crupi from Campbell’s Soup for their meaningful contributions to this year’s panel.

Through their presentations, our students gained a deeper understanding of:

  • The broad range of roles available within their organisations
  • The importance of education when applying for various positions
  • What employers seek in job applications and interview processes
  • Suitable job roles for school leavers
  • The critical value of having strong referees who can advocate on their behalf
  • The key qualities these organisations look for when engaging with young adults

We are truly thankful to Rowan, Michael, and Jeremy for their ongoing support of our school community and for providing our students with inspiring opportunities.

2025 Youth Leaders Program: Empowering Our Future Changemakers!

Recently, our incredible Middle School leaders had the exciting opportunity to take part in a Goulburn Murray Community Leadership (GMCL) pilot program, alongside students from Rushworth P-12 College.

The two-day program, hosted at La Trobe University's Shepparton Campus, was jam-packed with engaging activities, collaboration, and leadership development. Throughout the program, students worked together and explored a wide range of topics, including:

  •  Exploring different leadership styles
  • Identifying their own leadership style
  • The value of mentorship
  • The role of young leaders in their communities
  • How to advocate for community wellbeing
  • Public speaking and presentation skills
  • Team building
  • Volunteering and community involvement
  • How to lead and kickstart local community projects
  •

To cap off the experience, students worked in groups to develop and present their own community project ideas in a "Shark Tank"-style pitch to Ms Kerr, Ms Tozer, and a representative from Rushworth P-12.

What our students took away:

  • Boosted confidence in public speaking
  • A stronger understanding of volunteering opportunities in the Goulburn Murray region
  • New friendships and connections with GSSC peers and Rushworth students

Each student was presented with a Certificate of Participation, a valuable addition to their CVs. These certificates also open up potential referee opportunities for future programs, jobs, or volunteering roles.

A huge thank you to Jess Mitchell and Kimberley Chu from GMCL for partnering with GSSC to deliver such a meaningful experience for our students. Your support and mentorship were truly appreciated.

👏 Congratulations to all our student leaders for your outstanding participation and for representing GSSC with pride. We can’t wait to see where your leadership journeys take you next!
