S&A Stairs Industry Immersion Day

Tuesday 9 September 2025

On Tuesday 9th September 2025, twelve students from Mordialloc College attended the S & A Stairs Carpentry/Joinery Industry Immersion Day run by the Head Start team and hosted by Parkdale Secondary College. The day provided students with insight into the stair making process within the Stair Building and Joinery industry.

Careers in Stair Building/Joinery begin with the Certificate III in Joinery and can be a steppingstone to other opportunities within the construction industry. Students were able to participate in a demonstration of the stair building process guided by S&A Stairs, who are the largest stair building company in the Southern Hemisphere.

During today’s incursion, students contributed to the building of a 5-stair staircase with a handrail. Showcasing the key skills and expertise needed for the stair building industry, students followed a provided plan/diagram and demonstrated their ability to work constructively as a team, supported by staff from S&A Stairs, to complete the project.

We would like to thank the entire team at S&A Stairs for giving up their time and resources to allow students the chance to experience career pathways that can potentially be undertaken as a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship.

Students participated enthusiastically and it opened their eyes up to possible career opportunities in the stair building industry, utilising joinery skills. Understanding the differences between construction and joinery.
