Principal Update

Thursday 18 September 2025

Dear Families, Students and Community Members,

If I have timed this correctly, just as this newsletter lands in your inbox, the entire school will be in the gym taking part in Mordi Idol! This event is such a great way for our students to connect with each other, and to celebrate the talents of so many of their peers.

Our final day this term is Friday 19th September; students will finish at 1.30pm, at which point staff will get together to celebrate their hard work this term. A gentle reminder that we all return on Monday 6th October.

As the parent of a Year 11 student currently studying for their own VCE examination, I will be spending time this end of term break encouraging her to revise and get ready for the VCE examinations in Term 4. I can assure you that being a teacher doesn’t make that job any easier, but I am sure I can convince her that it will be worth it in the end! If I was going to offer any advice it would be to create a revision timetable (and stick to it!), engage diligently with exam question practice, reflecting on where and how marks are awarded, and use feedback provided by subject teachers to focus in on content that was probably always challenging, and so deserves a bit more of your time.

A big thank you to Mordialloc College staff who are coming in over the break to support students with additional revision classes; that information is shared with both them and you via Compass.

I really do hope that over the end of term break, you get to spend time with your favourite people, and I am looking forward to seeing you all back on Monday 6th October.

Instrumental Showcase

On 8th and 9th September, we celebrated our Instrumental Music Showcase across two nights, and showcased Brass, Woodwind and Percussion, Vocal, Piano and Guitar. I am not a musician but, I know amazing work when I hear it! Students from Year 7 to Year 12 played individual pieces in front of their families, and their peers, they were an absolute credit to the school. Whilst this will be the last Mordialloc College event for our Year 12 students, it was a fabulous way for them to go out with a bang. A credit to our dynamic music team - Demis Danoudis Coordinator (and teacher of guitar, piano, and voice), Nigel Maas (woodwind), Damien Maughan (brass), Jason Liacos (guitar), Adrian De Luca (drums), and Tahlia Makunde (voice) and I thank them for their ongoing support of our students.

R U OK? Day

Thursday 11th September was R U OK? Day. Whilst we educate our students about the importance of being able to ask, “R U ok?” on any day, this particular Thursday we accompanied that sentiment with Donuts, and raised over $1048.95 to go towards Performing Arts. A big thank you to Julia Hockey and the Promotions and Fundraising committee for the organisation of this event, and also to Kingston Youth Services for joining us on the day.

Countdown: Year 12

As we move towards our Year 12 students coming towards the end of their Mordialloc College journey, we have had a series of events to not only prepare them for examinations, but to also celebrate their educational journey.

In Week 8, to celebrate the last week of Year 12 content, our VCE VM & VCE students dressed as their ‘future selves’, and with a few dressing up as their favourite Mordialloc College teacher, a great day was had by all!

A huge thank you to all of the staff who were involved; particularly Bella Kennedy (Year 12 YLC) and Mick Haber (VM YLC) for organising all of the Year 12 events.

Year 12 students also spent time together during a BBQ, whilst fondly remembering their Primary School years.

In this final week of Term 3, it really has been back to business: our VCE students have been hard at work with Year 12 Practice Examinations, whilst our VCE VM students were involved in wrapping up their VM work before saying their final goodbyes to staff and getting ready for their 1-to-1 interviews with staff in Term 4.

Congratulations to new SBAT Student!

Congratulations to Hailey (Year 11) who signed up and commenced her Head Start school-based apprenticeships (SBAT) with employer Deco Hair on 12/09/2025 and is now completing her Certificate III in Hairdressing.

The Head Start program will support Hailey as she embarks on her SBAT journey commencing her qualification certificate, attending work with her employer and also working towards completing her VCE VM studies at school. Faith Kisby, Head Start Coordinator, and the Head Start team, wish Hailey all the best as she pursues her chosen career pathway.

France 2025.

We have had a “bonjour!” from our intrepid travellers who have touched down in France and have already visited the Eiffel Tower (and loved it so much they returned in the evening for more photos!), met up with their homestay families, and have spent the day in a French school. A massive thank you to Bournik Kabengele and Cynthia Leung who have both volunteered their time so that our students can engage with this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

I really do hope you have a great end of term.
