Foundation (Prep)

Welcome Prep C 2025!
What a wonderful start we have had! Despite the heat making the new routine even more tiring for the children, the class have settled beautifully. I have had many staff comment on how comfortable the new students look playing in the yard. We would like to send out a big thank you to our buddies for helping us settle in.
The newsletter is a great place to check in and see what we have been up to in the classroom. If your child is reluctant to talk about their school day, please know that is quite common and you can always catch up with what we have been doing on this page.
English
Students have been introduced to pre-writing lines that we use to form letters of the alphabet. They are using their whiteboards to practice and strengthen their fine motor skills.
We have shared many stories. You may have seen our delicious looking cakes on display in the classroom. These were made for the King after his cake was ruined when the gardener used his hose to put out the candles and it looked more like soup.
The students have been developing an understanding of what a word is, recognising words as meaningful units of communication and learning how to count words within a simple sentence.
Maths
The students have been introduced to the concept of trusting the count, beginning with collections up to 5. This introduces the students to strategies such as using 1:1 correspondence when counting, making collections and beginning to recognise small collections without having to count the objects one at a time.
We have started making book covers for our workbooks and the students are also practicing the correct formation of the numerals 1, 2 and 3.
So we can celebrate birthdays with our classmates this year, we started practicing the months of the year song. This will take quite a while to master but everyone enjoyed having a go. We made fish to put in a month of the year fish bowl so we can see whose birthday is coming up next.
School Tour
The class has been on a school tour and familiarised themselves with key areas around the school. It gave us an opportunity to discuss out of bounds areas and focus on areas that are safe and fun to play in.
Developmental Play
During Term 1, students are given the opportunity to build social connections through play in the classroom. Developmental play is a great way to bridge the children’s transition from the kindergarten setting to the primary school classroom. This session is allocated later in the day when students are becoming fatigued with structured learning.
The heat has really taken it our of some of the children this week. I hope you all enjoy a restful weekend.
