Year 9 Impact Program—Emerge

Nina Seuret-Batterham and Alexander Moore, Year 9 Impact Program Student Leaders

Our journey into Year 9 has begun with excitement and anticipation. We kicked off the Impact Program with 'Emerge' at the end of Year 8, a program that laid the foundation for the year ahead.

SETTING CULTURAL COMMITMENTS

To begin, we gathered as a cohort to discuss what we wanted this year to look like, and then collaboratively developed a set of cultural commitments to guide our approach. These commitments have ensured we consistently model the School’s values in every experience.

Our positive attitude and behaviour have even been recognised by the public, with Mr Williams receiving an email complimenting our group’s conduct!

LEARNING TO NAVIGATE THE CBD

The next phase of Emerge involved spending our Fridays in the city over the course of three weeks. Here, we engaged in a range of activities designed to enhance our ability to navigate and understand the world around us.

We began by learning how to travel independently and safely in the city. We covered crucial safety topics, including being aware of our surroundings, staying in groups, and knowing how to reach a teacher or guardian if needed. These discussions helped us feel more confident and empowered as we explored the city.

ENGAGING WORKSHOPS AND ACTIVITIES

The Empathy Workshop allowed us to explore how to better understand and connect with others, strengthening our relationships as a year level. The First Aid course provided us with life-saving skills, including CPR and basic injury management, ensuring we are prepared for emergencies.

Our City Tour was an eye-opening experience that familiarised us with key locations we’ll be using throughout the year, such as Melbourne Central and the Westpac building. The CBD Scavenger Hunt added an element of adventure, as we worked in teams to discover landmarks like the Shrine of Remembrance and the Melbourne Museum.

We've thoroughly enjoyed all the activities thus far, each one contributing to our growth and development.

LOOKING AHEAD TO THE NEXT SEMESTER

As we look ahead to the next semester, there is much to look forward to. One of the biggest highlights is Lift Off Week, starting on February 10. This will be an immersive experience, with three days in the city followed by two days at Monash University.

We're particularly excited about the opportunity to work alongside Monash in the 'It’s Everyone’s Business' initiative, where we'll collaborate in small groups to design our own businesses.

Of course, the Year 9 expeditions are another major highlight we're all eagerly anticipating. Whether heading to Cape York for an adventurous exploration at the northernmost tip of Australia or discovering the stunning coastlines of Great South West Victoria, these trips promise to be unforgettable experiences that will challenge us and bring us closer together.

From learning how to navigate the city to discovering more about our future pathways, the Emerge program has already given us invaluable experiences. As we continue throughout the year, we're excited to grow as independent individuals and make the most of every opportunity that comes our way.
