For their final project of the year, the Grade 5 and 6 students have been investigating the Element of ‘Space’. Space can refer to the positioning of subjects, the positive/negative space that the subjects create, and depth of field i.e foreground, middleground and background.
They learnt about American artist Grant Haffner whose images are inspired by and reflect the country roads, that he takes in as he travels around the country. Using one point perspective to show depth, the students sketched a road with foreground and background and painted in bright fluorescent colours.
The road was painted in blacks and greys, with mountains or telegraph poles also added. The poles are drawn getting smaller and smaller as they are getting further away from the viewer. This technique adds to the perception of depth in the artwork.
