In our Garden

Welcome to Gardening for Term 4

We have a busy term ahead as Spring and early Summer are our most productive times.

The weather has been a very mixed bag with some absolutely beautiful Spring days mixed in with some very wild and windy ones too.

F1 have enjoyed harvesting some of our potatoes and reaped the rewards when Grade 6C prepared wedges for them all during cooking!

Week 2 it was 2/3's turn and Mr MB created a sensation in his grade with his wedges.

Here F1T are having a great time finding "Gold"  Eureka!

Grade 4/5 Latrobe University Projects

16 Second year students from Latrobe university have been working with our grade 4/5's on four special projects.  Here are their introductions-

Sunny Solutions

Hello everyone! We are some of the students undertaking the Outdoor and Sustainability Education course at Latrobe University in second year. We are super excited to spend some time volunteering with your school and looking at the sustainable practices that your school is involved with, that helps look after our planet and sources sustainable energy. Solar panels are an incredible invention that takes some pressure off our planet and uses the sun for energy! We can’t wait to meet you very soon and do some awesome work with you!

Karen Garden Gourds

With the help and supervision from La Trobe University Outdoor, Sustainable education students, the grade 4/5’s will be making climbing structures for their vegetable garden to help these plants grow. They will be using a range of hand tools and home-grown materials to work collectively in a team to build these structures.

Under the Canopy

Hey there! We are Outdoor and Sustainability Education students from La Trobe University. With the end of semester and a hot summer drawing closer we have the opportunity to plant some fire-safe understory plantings with the Grade 4 and 5’s. We

are excited to get our hands in the dirt and share the beauty and importance of native flora species while getting out in the outdoors! Hope you have your green thumbs ready! - Charlie, Heidi, Stacey and Ben!

Waste Warriors

With the direction and assisted teaching from La Trobe University Outdoor Education and Sustainability education students, the grade 4 and Grade 5 students will be looking at the ways they can reduce the waste they bring to school in their lunchboxes. Students will learn about different types of waste and the harmful impacts of waste to the environment. Students will then extend themselves to advocate to their peers in the wider school community a need for reducing their lunchtime waste and how the school can reduce their environmental impact during breaktimes.

4/5 WP had their session on Tuesday and did some amazing work introducing our garden program (Thankyou Ms Wadley and 4/5WP), the Latrobe Visitors were very impressed by their knowledge.

If you look carefully along the entrance ramp to the upstairs classrooms, you will see some of the work that has been completed already!

PS

Did you know the school has a 40Kw solar system and it is generating roughly 1000kwh of power per week of energy and saving 15 tonnes of greenhouse gas a month.  Its monthly output is enough to power an average household for a year!

Flower power

Grade 6 has been busy out on the Old Violet Street side of the school planting flowers and weeding.  Our Volunteers Kylie and Bailey kept them on their toes. It will be great to see all the blooms when they flower.  We planted sunflowers and zinnias.

Our Next Working Bee!

it's that time of the year when our garden is BURSTING with growth- that's plants we want, and quite a few we don't want! We hope that you have some time to help us keep our garden looking well cared for.

Parents and Friends are holding a working bee after school, 3:15-4:15, on 8th November.

Sign in at office and meet at the garden Rotunda.

Keep an eye on the Parents and Friends section in the newsletter as they will be letting you know more.

Happy Gardening!

From Sara.
