School Vision & Values

As many of you may be aware, over the last 18 months, Warrandyte Primary School has worked hard to implement School Wide Positive Behavior Supports (SWPBS) throughout our wonderful school.

SWPBS has emerged as a powerful approach to promoting positive behaviors and creating a conducive environment for personal growth, particularly in educational settings. The concept is a systematic and evidence-based approach designed to improve behavior and overall well-being by reinforcing positive behaviors and minimizing negative ones. It is commonly implemented in Victorian Government schools.

At WPS, you may notice some of the supports being implemented throughout the school:

  1. Prevention: The cornerstone of SWPBS is prevention. Instead of waiting for problem behaviors to occur, SWPBS focuses on identifying and addressing potential issues before they escalate. This is achieved through proactive planning and the creation of a supportive environment.
  2. Clearly Defined Expectations: Establishing clear and consistent behavioral expectations is crucial. These expectations should be defined positively, emphasizing what individuals should do rather than what they should not do. For instance, "Use kind words" instead of "Don't be rude." Our behaviour matrix is where you will find all WPS’s expectations clearly outlined.
  3. Positive Reinforcement: SWPBS places a strong emphasis on positive reinforcement. Positive behaviors are acknowledged and rewarded, providing individuals with incentives to continue making positive choices. Rewards can be verbal praise, tokens, privileges, or other meaningful incentives. You may notice your child comes home and mentions that have received a ‘PBA’ at school, which is an acronym that we use at WPS for positive behaviour acknowledgement.  After accruing a given number of PBA’s students can claim a reward.

The benefits of SWPBS extend beyond our school, helping create a world where everyone can thrive and reach their full potential.
