Literacy

This week I have been visited by many young authors keen to share their fantastic writing from all year levels. It is always such a lovely moment to see our students so very excited by their learning, especially writing pieces which they have crafted themselves. Writing is challenging as it requires both authorial skills such as determining plotlines, word choices, sentence fluency and secretarial skills such as spelling, punctuation and handwriting.

This term, Year 3 and 4 have been working on a poetry unit. Specifically, students have been learning how to add personification, rhyming and repetition into their poems, making their texts more engaging, emotive and persuasive. As part of their inquiry unit looking at animals facing extinction, the students wrote poems as calls to action. Here are just a few samples of the impressive writing skills from the Solway students.

The Tent

He quietly crinkled as he swayed and danced.

He put me to sleep with a big warm and cozy hug and quietly whispers to me when I need to wake up.

The Ball

The ball is tall and ready to go.

It wakes up in the morning glow.

I kick it high and low and take it everywhere I go.

It pumps on the side and bumps in my heart as the sun starts to go the ball is pumping in the glow.

Still screaming as it smashes the net.

The Wind

I hear the wind coming.

I also her humming.

She says she’s sad because of the sun.

I get angry and tell my mum.

The next day I shout ‘Silly wind, no wonder the sun was so mean!’

I stropped home angry about what happened today.

That night I heard a cry.

It was the wind.

I said sorry for everything.

I just don’t like the cold I say.

But after that there was no windy days.
