Year 1 & 2 Celebrates Simultaneous Storytime 2025 with "The Truck Cat"

Our Year 1 and 2 students had a wonderful time participating in National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) 2025, a beloved event that brings children across Australia and New Zealand together through the joy of reading.

What is Simultaneous Storytime? Every year, a picture book written and illustrated by an Australian author is chosen to be read aloud in schools, libraries, childcare centres, and homes at the same time. This shared reading experience helps promote the value of reading and literacy, celebrates great Australian literature and most importantly, it’s a lot of fun!

This year’s book, The Truck Cat by Deborah Niland, tells the heartwarming and adventurous tale of Tinka, a feisty and curious cat who travels in a truck with her human companion. Students were drawn into Tinka’s world, giggling at her cheeky personality and wondering what adventure she might go on next.

Following the reading, our Year 1 and 2 students let their imaginations run wild by writing their own adventures for Tinka. Their stories allowed Tinka to explore all sorts of fun and exciting new places from luscious forests, to schools, zoos and parks! It was wonderful to see the vivid adjectives the students used to describe the settings. The children also coloured their own bright and colourful versions of Tinka.

Activities like NSS not only encourage a love of reading, but also provide opportunities for children to develop their comprehension, vocabulary and storytelling skills. They also support collaboration and build confidence as students share and celebrate their creative efforts with others. We are so proud of the enthusiasm and imagination our students showed during Simultaneous Storytime 2025. Be sure to read The Truck Cat again with your child at home.
