A Spotlight on Learning

A Spotlight on Learning in the SLC on Heights Campus
This semester has gone by very quickly and before we know it, we are already halfway through the school year! Term 2 has been packed with a variety of learning opportunities, special events and celebrations for our Senior Learning Centre students both in and outside school. They have built on their knowledge and understanding across all areas of the curriculum, and have demonstrated our school values of Respect, Resilience, Collaboration and Excellence through their experiences during activities such as our SLC Camp on Phillip Island and Reconciliation Week.
Our SLC students have been encouraged to share their ideas as to what activities they would like to see at school. Their Student Voice led to student initiatives such as a weekly Run Club, Book Recommendations and ‘Run For Truth’. ‘Run For Truth’ started during Reconciliation Week and the goal is for the students to complete 2000 laps of our school oval as their commitment and action towards reconciliation, before the end of Term 2.
During Reading, students have been learning how to scan fiction and nonfiction texts to locate relevant information to build their knowledge. They used text clues and connected to their background knowledge to make inferences and draw conclusions.
In Writing, students developed their ability to entertain and engage their readers by including descriptive words and phrases, tapping into their five senses and emotions. They chose a text type, such as poetry, fictional recount, or narratives, to represent their writing style and their thoughts relating to the Reconciliation Week theme for this year, ‘Bridging Now to Next’. We had a writing competition where Mrs Cottier was the judge and the top 3 were selected. Congratulations to Selena (1st), Marian (2nd) and Kaitlyn (3rd).
In Mathematics, the SLC students have delved into Additive Thinking this term. They have been learning to solve addition problems, working with larger numbers, fractions, decimal fractions and mixed numbers. They rounded numbers to estimate and check the accuracy of their calculations. Students have also practised using different strategies to help them identify unknown number when working with equivalent number sentences.
Excitement has filled our learning spaces this term with the start of our Chemical Science unit on reversible and irreversible changes in Projects. Students discussed the changes they noticed when conducting experiments, comparing and classifying observable physical or chemical changes to materials. They planned and investigated factors that affect reactions, making predictions and the reason for them, recording their observations, and evaluating the investigations. Looks like there are a few potential future scientists in the making!
We are very proud of the students for the great sportsmanship they have shown throughout our Winter Interschool Sports where they have competed against other schools in our school district in netball, soccer, AFL and sofcrosse. Well done to both our netball teams and our sofcrosse team for making to the District Winter Finals.
The SLC teachers and students are looking forward to sharing their achievements during the Student-Led Conferences in the last week of Term 2. Wishing everyone a safe and wonderful upcoming school holidays!
