Welcome to Term 2 Week 10! Time flies by quickly, and we are almost halfway through the year. We have had a lot of fun in the past few weeks, with many events such as House Cross Country, Interschool Sports and conducting Science experiments. We have also celebrated and learned more about many special events, such as Refugee Week and NAIDOC Week.
Last week, we had our very first Whole School Cross Country! It was an exciting day where we could dress up in our own House colours and compete with students from different houses! Everyone had a choice in how they wanted to participate. They could either run, jog or walk. We were very happy to see everyone contributing and having fun as they cheered for their houses! Many tokens were given out for various reasons, especially for those who were showing Resilience with some students pushing themselves to the end even though they wanted to give up!
In Week 9, we celebrated Refugee Week. Refugee Week is an event that is celebrated annually between the 15th of June to the 21st of June. Refugee Week is important because it raises awareness about refugees and the challenges they face. The SLC students learned more about refugees and their personal experiences by reading about them. One of the books they read was called The Little Refugee by Anh Do, which tells his personal story of escaping from Vietnam.
Throughout the reading lesson, students asked questions before, during, and after reading so they could better understand and connect with the text. The teachers also did some learning around Refugee Week and had a special morning tea where people from our Community Hub joined so they could share their stories.
In Maths, the SLC students have been learning to add solve addition problems using efficient written strategies. Many of the SLC students have been working on adding numbers with decimal fractions up to hundredths and even thousandths, with some students creating their own problems. Students have been using the worked examples that their teachers have created to help them understand the language they need to use, and the process that they need to follow to demonstrate the success criteria. They are using their fluency time to practise efficient mental strategies so they can work through the algorithm more efficiently.
Projects have been a lot of fun lately and the SLC students have been bursting with excitement! After all, there’s nothing more exciting than mixing coke and mentos. Writing a science report was both educational and entertaining, as we got to go through the scientific method of making a hypothesis, and then we got to create some geysers! We learned that when mentos is dropped into coke, their rough surface causes the trapped carbon dioxide gas to escape quickly, creating lots of bubbles that push the soda out in a big, fizzy eruption.
Interschool sports is coming to an end with the final on the 27th of June. This season has been very good for all the sports, with soccer, netball and AFL making it to the finals. Congratulations to everyone for a fantastic season!
NAIDOC Week is coming up during the holidays! It is a special time in Australia when we celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The theme for this year is “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy” . It's a great way for all Australians to learn more about the world’s oldest continuing cultures! Another way that we are embracing NAIDOC week is by writing poems and creating our "Deadly Doors".
Friendly reminder that parent teacher interview will be next Wednesday the 2nd of July. Please remind your parents to book a slot if they haven't already.
