Court Report: RKAS Round-Up

Article by Mr Harris, Ms Paki, Mr Asphar & Mr O’Malley

The King’s College proudly fields RKAS after-school teams across a range of sports. Pictured here is our Year 7 mixed Netball team, who have represented the College brilliantly this term.  The girls have shown outstanding commitment—attending every game, try-out, and training session with enthusiasm. They bring great energy to the court, playing with competitive spirit and excellent sportsmanship. Standout players last week were Gladys and Grace for strong intercepts and positioning, Sofie and Aylah for sharp passing, and Melah for her all-round netball skill. It’s a pleasure to coordinate and coach our dedicated teams this term.

Thinking, Writing, Analysing – Curtin Conference in Focus

Article by Mr Ray Andrew | Head of English

This is the third consecutive year that The King’s College has attended the Curtin University English and Literature Conference 2025. The conference exposes our Year 12 English ATAR students to industry leaders in our subject, such as past and present WACE examiners and leaders of the English Teachers Association of Western Australia (ETAWA). The content dovetails perfectly with our syllabus and affirms the learning of our students, building confidence as we stride towards the WACE exams. It was especially pleasing to see our students interacting confidently with Claire Burton, the current President of ETAWA, on the complex topic of ‘voice’, in a lecture theatre full of ATAR students from across WA. Hear what our students had to say about their experience...

Simar M. The first session on ‘Understanding Perspective’ helped us recognise how a character’s viewpoint shapes a text’s meaning. However, the most engaging sessions were the second and third, ‘Analysis and Short Answer’ and ‘What is Voice?’. These stood out due to their interactive nature and the way the content was clearly explained. We had the opportunity to break down short answer questions, identify key techniques, and understand how ‘voice’ is constructed by authors to influence tone and meaning. These sessions made complex ideas more accessible.

Kenneth M. It’s an understatement to say “we learned SOME things”. We were privileged to hear from a variety of speakers, providing insight into key ATAR concepts such as ‘perspective’, ‘voice’ and ‘context’. Aside from the raw notetaking, this conference was a glimpse into the university experience. I personally enjoyed the session by former Chief Examiner – Elizabeth Howson – whose tips on breaking down a short answer response I found simply invaluable. Our class had a taste of the autonomy, the cafés, and the nightmarish parking, all of which we are looking forward to post-graduation.

Encounter Day Term 2 "Holy Spirit" Theme

Article by Rev. Dr Michael Battersby | Director of Worship and Special Projects

On Friday 27 June, our Year 11s and 12s had an incredible ENCOUNTER DAY – A day where we took every moment to lean in, enquire and experience the presence of the Holy Spirit. Students may be in slightly different stages of their walk with God, but they collaborated respectfully in their discussion groups, joined Mosh pits and broke bread (PIZZA) together throughout a day of incredible unity, harmony and discovery.

Micah Walker (former College and Music Captain) led the ALPHA series sessions where, from the BIG RED COUCH, she and a panel asked the big questions about who the Holy Spirit is and how He can impact our lives. Speaking of Alumni – a passionate group of former students banded together and led the praise and worship times. It was so moving to see them back at their old school, leading the next generation of TKC worshippers.

The theme also came through strongly with guest youth leaders from around the state sharing about how to hear the voice of God and follow boldly in His ways.  These visiting speakers were so impressed with the hunger and respect shown by our students, many of whom were really touched as they responded in the ministry times.  Well done to our Ministry Captains and Music Captains who designed and ran the program on the day, and thanks to our College and House Captains who organised fun games in the breaks. Thanks also go to Mrs Paul and Ps. Linda and staff who supported the day so well.

Our next ENCOUNTER DAY will actually be opened up to the entire Secondary school on 11 September, and this is called our big EXO DAY!! Praise God for all He is doing in the lives of our College.

Capturing the Magic of the Blue Hour

Article by Mrs Parnham and Mrs De Piazza | General Photography Teachers

In Week 9, our dedicated Year 11 and 12 Design Photography students set their alarm clocks early and braved the chilly June weather to experience one of nature’s most breathtaking light shows — the ‘Blue Hour’.

For those unfamiliar with the term, Blue Hour refers to the short window of time just before sunrise and after sunset when the sun is below the horizon but the sky takes on deep blue and indigo tones. In Perth’s winter months, this unique light is especially striking along our coastline, adding atmosphere and drama to every shot.

This year, students headed to Point Peron in Rockingham — a perfect setting with rugged limestone cliffs, calm waters and uninterrupted ocean views. Armed with tripods, warm jackets and beanies, students experimented with long exposure techniques, silhouette photography and creative compositions that showcased their growing skills behind the lens. We are incredibly proud of the commitment, creativity and enthusiasm our students showed on this frosty morning, and we can’t wait to see how the final product of these stunning images displayed later this year as part of our annual Arts Exhibition.

A big thank you to Mr Harris, who volunteered to drive the school bus and who supported the early start and helped make this valuable hands-on experience possible.

Some students' thoughts...

Samarah - "I enjoyed taking photos on the excursion, but we arrived too early and had to wait for enough light to start shooting."

Blake - "I didn’t enjoy the early start, but the excursion was really fun."

Alexis - "Despite the cold, early start and most cameras not working in the dark, I still enjoyed it—spending time with friends and the breakfast made it all worth it."
