Student Involvement & Academic News
Term 2, 2025
In May, Year 11 Geography students participated in an overnight excursion to Marysville and Kinglake, where they completed fieldwork to explore the impacts of the Black Saturday bushfires that devastated Marysville and the surrounding towns in 2009. Students visited the local town, the bushfire museum, Steavenson Falls and Kinglake CFA to research the impacts. Students then completed a SAC in class to report on their findings.
We have had a busy term with lots of community involvement.
On Sorry Day, our Koorie Captains and interested students joined with Red Hill Consolidated School to recognise that day and support each other. We had a wonderful talk by Uncle Shane from Bunurong Land Council and we also loved listening to the preschoolers from Red Hill Preschool and the Primary students sing their hearts out. I hope you enjoyed the Reconciliation posts via Compass News recognising the local heroes who have gifted their time and energy to our Koorie students.
Our Koorie Captains and older students participated in our KELiS (Koorie Emerging Leaders in Schools) event at Mt Eliza Secondary College. This involved a beautiful Welcome to Country from Josh West of BLC and lots of different cultural activities, including Wellbeing yarns, damper making, a discussion on voting and the power of our voice, information on the importance of Treaty by the First Peoples Assembly of Victoria.
For NAIDOC WEEK coming up in holidays, we will be celebrating by having a NAIDOC FESTIVAL on the Thursday of the first week back.
At RECESS time, we will host a sausage sizzle to raise money for our local gathering place in Frankston, Nairm Marr Djambana. We also will have some art activities running through the day.
At LUNCHTIME, we will have an Acknowledgement to Country and yidaki playing by ex-student Hudson Fraser and Lionel Lauch from Living Culture.
Our debating teams have had a fantastic season so far in the Debaters Association of Victoria competition. Our Year 9 team (D Grade) has gone undefeated this year thus far, and will be progressing into the finals next term, a huge achievement! Congratulations to Sarah, Aaron and Sophie!
Meanwhile, our Year 10 (C Grade) and Year 12 (A Grade) teams have each recorded a win, showing great improvement and growth in confidence and skill. We’re incredibly proud of the effort and dedication shown by all our debaters and look forward to seeing how they continue to develop and compete. Well done to all involved!
The Crucible – Live Performance
As part of their studies of Arthur Miller’s famous play ‘The Crucible’, Year 11 students had the opportunity to see a live performance. Actors from the Complete Works Theatre Company acted out key scenes of the drama, which explores ideas about integrity, hysteria and the corrupting influence of power. Students viewed a powerful performance and then had the opportunity to discuss with the actors their interpretations of the play and its ideas. Seeing a play live offers students a dynamic interpretation of a written play and highlights the key dilemmas and themes.
