Term 2, 2025

Semester 1 Dance Performance Evening

On May 20th, our dance students took to the stage in a vibrant evening of performance for families and friends. The event showcased the remarkable talent, technique, and creativity of our students across all year levels. We witnessed breathtaking performances from our Year 11 and 12 students who presented their skill-based solos as part of their Unit 1 and 3 assessments. These performances were complemented by class learned dances with the Year 12’s choreographed by guest teacher Liana Samson Piniata.

Audiences also enjoyed dynamic performances from our Year 9 and 10 Dance classes, featuring works choreographed by both students and their teachers. The evening was a proud celebration of student achievement and artistic growth.

The program also featured a high-energy performance by our Dance Club, made up of students from Years 7 to 12, who delivered a modern jazz routine to N-Trance, choreographed by Ms Jennii Johnson and Ms Taryn Sabell.

Students considering Dance as a subject in Years 9, 10 or VCE in 2026, or those interested in joining Dance Club, are warmly encouraged to attend our next performance night in Semester 2 or speak with any of the Dance teachers to learn more.

Term 2 Dance Workshop Incursion

On Wednesday, 25th of June students from Dance Club, and Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 Dance were fortunate to take part in a series of workshops led by professional dancer and choreographer Melissa Taylor. Melissa, a Deakin University Creative Arts (Dance) graduate, is an internationally accredited hip hop judge, performer, teacher, and choreographer, with an impressive international career spanning Melbourne and Los Angeles. Her work features in numerous dance productions and videos, and she is highly regarded within the global dance community.

The day began with an energetic hip hop workshop for our Dance Club students during Period 1, followed by a second hip hop session with our Year 9 Dance students (both Semester 1 and Semester 2 classes). These workshops encouraged students to step outside their comfort zones, and many embraced the challenge with enthusiasm and confidence. Later in the day, our Year 10 and VCE Dance students participated in a contemporary workshop that combined artistry with technical demand, offering a rich and rewarding learning experience.

We extend our sincere thanks to Melissa Taylor for her time, energy, and inspiration. Her passion and professionalism left a lasting impression on our students and contributed meaningfully to their development as emerging dancers at Dromana College.

Wakakirri 2025

Our 2025 Wakakirri dance production is well underway, with student choreographers currently finalising their routines. As of this week, our senior creative team has met to confirm costume designs, while our set piece is scheduled for construction over the school holidays.

With only three weeks available in Term 3 for final rehearsals, we will be incorporating additional lunchtime sessions and Thursday after-school practices. These extra rehearsals will focus on refining and polishing the performance in preparation for our big night at the Frankston Arts Centre on 12 August.

Our students have shown outstanding responsibility, creativity and commitment throughout the process, and their excitement is building as the performance draws near. We look forward to seeing all their hard work come to life on stage!

Dance Club

Each Tuesday morning from 7:15 to 8:15 am, students are invited to take part in Dance Club. Open to all year levels (Years 7–12), the club welcomes students of all experience levels, from seasoned dancers to complete beginners.

Dance Club explores a range of styles, offering students the opportunity to learn and perform routines from different dance genres. This year, we began with a lively modern jazz piece inspired by 1970s style in Term 1, and we are now working on a contemporary routine.

Students interested in joining are encouraged to speak with or email Ms Taryn Sabell or Ms Jennii Johnson for more information. All are welcome!
