This term in Science, our students have been investigating the properties of everyday materials. Through hands-on exploration, they’ve had the opportunity to examine and compare a variety of materials, discussing how they feel, how they can be used, and what makes them suitable for different purposes. Students particularly enjoyed getting creative—designing, building, and experimenting as they applied their knowledge in fun and practical ways.
In Humanities, we have also been learning about different cultures and celebrations from around the world. Students were excited to discover where their classmates’ families originated and to learn about traditions, festivals, and customs that are celebrated in different parts of the globe. These discussions have sparked curiosity and appreciation for the diversity within our own classroom and school. It has been a joy to celebrate the multiculturalism in our community and to see students proudly share stories, artefacts, and traditions from their own backgrounds.
The Prep Team
During the past few weeks of Term 2, our Grade 1 Students have been actively engaged in their learning in all subjects.
In Reading and Writing, we have been learning about narratives. Students have been developing predictions about what is going to happen in a text, and have used clues in the text to make inferences about characters feelings and their actions. They have also continued to develop their understanding of summarising a text, decoding words and reading fluently. We have explored the book ‘Old Tom’ in writing, and students have begun to plan and develop their own narrative by using Old Tom as inspiration.
In Mathematics, we have continued learning about patterns. Students have engaged in activities that develop their understanding of growing patterns and skip counting. They have engaged in many activities such as counting collections of objects using skip counting and linking this understanding to counting 5 cent and 10 cent coins. Students have also learnt how to identify missing numbers in a sequence using skip counting. They have also explored the concept of time. Students have learnt about duration and sequencing events based on their duration, whilst also learning about the months and seasons of this year. Students also investigated durations of time that are represented in Aboriginal seasonal calendars.
We can’t wait for the next few weeks of learning with our students!

The Year 1 Teachers
As we approach the final weeks of Term 2, it’s clear just how much effort and enthusiasm our Year 2 students have brought to their learning this semester. Here’s a look at what we’ve been learning:
Reading
Over the past couple of weeks in reading, students have been diving into the structure and language of recount texts. They are developing their comprehension and fluency by answering questions about what they’ve read and are applying strategies like sounding out and re-reading to decode unfamiliar words. Phonological awareness has remained a key focus, with students exploring letter blends, and sound patterns such as /ed/, ‘ch’ as in Christmas, /ng/ and /igh/.
Writing
Over the past fortnight, our Year 2 students have produced some fantastic writing as we shifted our focus from informative texts to recounts. Students have drawn upon their own personal experiences to write about memorable moments within their lives. A highlight of this learning was a sensory walk around the school grounds, where students engaged their senses of sight, sound, smell, and touch to help generate rich, descriptive language for their writing.
Mathematics
For the remainder of the term in Maths, the year two students will be focusing on Pattern and Algebra and Time. They have begun exploring various ways to make patterns including through shapes, colours, growing patterns and exploring number patterns through skip counting. In time, students have been exploring calendars, learning about months of the year and telling the time on analogue and digital clocks. They will be exploring elapsed time and discussing how long it takes to complete everyday tasks.
Science
Science has been hands-on and engaging as students investigated the properties of materials. They experimented with opaque and translucent resources to create their own shadow puppets, learning how light interacts with different materials. Their focus has now shifted to sustainability, as they explore ways to reuse materials — like turning cardboard boxes into toy cars!
(PupHumanities
In our Humanities unit, students shared fascinating cultural artefacts and stories from their own families, fostering rich conversations about heritage and identity. A special highlight was a visit from our Koorie Club leader and Education Support staff member, Mel Kelty, who shared Indigenous stories and cultural knowledge with the classes.
We are looking forward to our excursion to the Melbourne Museum on Wednesday the 25th of June, where we’ll build on what we’ve been learning in our Science and Humanities units.
Health
In Health, students have been learning about staying safe in different environments — including on the road, near water, in nature, and in the sun. They’ve been discussing strategies and habits that help keep them safe and applying this knowledge to real-life scenarios.
We are so proud of the hard work, curiosity, and growth the Year 2 students have shown this term. We look forward to a strong finish to the semester and even more exciting learning ahead in Term 3!
