No More "I'm Bored"- Free and Fun Activities for the Kids these school holidays
School holidays are here — and we all know what comes next... the inevitable "I'm boooored!" But fear not! Melbourne is bursting with free and family-friendly activities that will keep kids entertained without breaking the budget.
Here are some ideas to get you started:
Science Works
Entry is free for kids, and there's plenty to explore! Think hands-on experiments, space adventures, and interactive exhibits.
Royal Botanic Gardens- Cranbourne
Perfect for a picnic or a nature scavenger hunt. Keep an eye out for the Children’s Garden, where little ones can dig, splash and climb to their heart’s content.
NGV- National Gallery of Victoria
The NGV offers free kids’ exhibitions and drop-in creative workshops these holidays. It’s a great way to inspire their inner artist.
Local Libraries
Many branches run free holiday programs with story times, LEGO clubs, craft sessions and even movie days!
The Langwarrin Library, part of Frankston City Libraries, is offering a variety of free school holiday programs for children this winter. These events are designed to be fun, educational, and engaging for kids of all ages.
LEGO Builders Club
- When: Every Sunday afternoon from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM
- Where: Frankston Library
- Details: Children aged 5 and up can unleash their creativity with LEGO bricks. No bookings required; just drop in and start building! library.frankston.vic.gov.au
Bunnings DIY Craft Workshop
- When: Monday, 7 July 2025, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM
- Where: Carrum Downs Library
- Details: A Bunnings expert will guide children aged 6 and above through a hands-on DIY project they can take home. Bookings are essential, and a parent or carer must stay with their child during the event.
NAIDOC Storytime
- When: Tuesday, 8 July 2025, from 10:00 AM to 10:30 AM
- Where: Frankston Library
- Details: Join Skyla for a special Dreamtime Storytime session in acknowledgment of NAIDOC Week 2025. This event celebrates traditional Indigenous culture through storytelling.
Umbrella Decorating Workshop
- When: Thursday, 10 July 2025, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM
- Where: Frankston Library
- Details: Children can personalize their own umbrellas using various colors and designs. It's a creative way to enjoy the winter season. Bookings are required for each child participant; adults do not need to book but must stay with their child during the event.
Explore New Playgrounds
Ballam Park has something for everyone.Spanning over 30 hectares, it features two big playgrounds, a basketball half-court, tennis wall, walking trails, ovals and an athletics track. Shade and barbecues provided in the large picnic area make it even easier to stay a little longer and make a day of it.
Fed Square & ACMI
Check out free kids’ films, interactive exhibits and workshops at ACMI (Australia’s museum of screen culture). Plus, the square often hosts surprise pop-up activities.
Funky Farm at McClelland
Come and get up close with Australian native animals, including reptiles, mammals, birds, and perhaps even a crocodile!
Funky Farm, a unique boutique zoo located on the Mornington Peninsula, will be visiting McClelland during the summer school holidays.
Beginning with an informative talk from the Funky Farm team, which introduces the animals of the day. Afterward, you'll have the chance to meet, pet, and even hold a variety of fascinating creatures.
