Science

Grades 5 & 6
All living things have DNA: the chemical instructions on how to make a living thing. Although you might think that DNA is too small to be visible, it can be easily seen with the naked eye when collected from thousands of cells.
The 5/6 Science elective used a simple method to extract DNA from a strawberry and actually see it.
We explored the question how much DNA do you share with living things?
Chimpanzee 98%
Zebrafish 85%
Fruit Fly 36%
Round Worm 21%
Mustard grass 15 %
Bacteria 7 %
Did you know that 60% of the DNA present in strawberries is also present in humans?
Jump Rope for Heart
Thank you to our Heart Heroes who are skipping for Jump Rope for Heart. After one week we have raised so far $616.00 which can support a research nurse for one day, a vital part of the research team.
Our school goal is 40 hours of skipping and $3000.00. Our Jump of Day is Tuesday, the 8th of July.
Grade 5/6 students during their Science elective have been learning about heart health, research, the circulatory system and extracted DNA from strawberries. They also are skipping as part of the Jump Rope for Heart program. Don't forget to register your child so we can record their skipping data. Thank you to those students who are already Heart Heroes and are fundraising for the Heart Foundation!
An extra shout out to all those students throughout the school who are making a difference who are skipping at school and at home.
